California has been changed a lot.
If you want to live in far Northern CA (SF and Sac don't count). I was born in a tiny town near Burney and grew up in a different town which is 80 miles away from Reno. Prepare for 90s degree during the summers, annoying deers crashing into the wall of the houses and buildings, and keep that small bears out of your trashes. Some houses came with private wells. Can't stand fog. Get tire chains for winter seasons. Love Lake Tahoe and National Parks like Lassen and Burney falls. Redding, and Susanville are kinda of isolated. Eureka is pretty and charming, but many homes are old. As far as I know that Fresno and Modesto are cheap. The pollen in Fresno is awful.
If you own any "older" Asian car like Honda and Nissan, sell it. If you don't want to sell your car, get a garage to guard your Asian car. Older Asian cars are popular for car thieves. My bro's former Nissan car was broken into a few times in Fresno. His friends are frustrated with the same problems in Sac, Modesto, and Stockton. My niece's Honda car was broken into, and they took her Mac laptop. I used to have Honda car, and always kept it in the garage. Had never any problem with it.
My friend and her husband just moved back to CA. Their condo rent costs over almost $2,000/month. Dublin is a young city, and is still growing. They prefer to live in a large deaf community. It is one of the reasons they moved back from Texas.
I have to agree with another member about California's economy being really bad right now. On of my friends tried to move to California last month but had to move back to Baltimore because of no jobs but then again, she was looking for a job as a photographer in the modeling industry. Another friend of mine got a job easily at the deaf school in Riverside so I guess it all depends on what kind of job you are looking for. Good luck!

Fremont is way expensive. What about Citrus Heights area?
Fremont is one of the cheapest area here now except for Oakland......And nobody survives in Oakland...... unless you go way away from the bat
@Seq.....as another poster said make sure you have a job first. Statewide unemployment is at 11.7% this month and the rural areas are worse. Things are pretty bad here right now and taxes are going up.

curious - what's "cheap" to you?
btw - my friend's surviving Oakland just fine... probably cuz she's helping them from legal injustice
Is the rents reasonable? :-P

Yes, Lake Merritt, Piedmont, Grand Ave, and Jack London are very nice area in Oakland. I go there many times, and I never had any hesitation to walk during night times.

Oakland Crimespotting
But then again I saw cops with guns drawn on Market St in SF today.....Only a block away from Westfield.....so maybe no place is safe anymore.
