Your home, preparing for winter:

With winter fast approaching this area--(America), such daunting tasks to carry out and get done in relation to winterizing a home...what are some of the things any of you do to prepare a home for the long cold wintery days?

Nothing!!! LOL..

The only thing I do is change filter for heater.. that's just about it.. oh and put anti-freeze in my car (not related at home, but that's what I do)
Extra blankets in handy.. kerosene heater which has never been used but someday we might...

Very cute RebelGirl, heh heh--

One of the reasons I created this thread was twofold, to give insight to tasks that can be done that some members may not be aware of doing and also with the heating costs on the rise due to gas prices going up this winter, what ways we can ensure that our gas bills stay down by doing specific maintenance that might get overlooked...changing the furnance filter is one (a good one too, and for other obvious reasons).... ;)

eh i dont have to worry abt the winter :-D so this might not be my thread but even tho we DO have the raining season during winter altho warm here and all we do prepare for the daunting task of prepping our hurricane boxes AND also setting up for our power outages making sure our generator's working right and fridge isn't stocked up too much in case. and not only that change filters on our cars/trucks so its not soo wet and humid on our engines. so thats it. and ofc make sure our tires are in the right condtion for never know any unexpectant mishaps happens.

Good thread here. :thumb:

We ordered 3,000 litres oil to fill our tanks at oil room in the basement for heater/hot water last month. (We don't have gas or electricity for heater/hot water but heating oil).

We also ordered alot of hardwoods/firewoods for 1 open fireplace with glass door for 2nd living room & Tiled stoves for 1st living & dinning room. We store alot of woods in the garage. From now we use woods for fireplaces EVERYDAY instead of every weekends due oil expenses.

The chimney sweeping inspector came to inspect our heating system, chimney etc to clean the dust from heating system (burner, firm of fuel, etc) last week. The Chimney sweeping inspector is obligate to control every house twice a year (April & October) accord Enivorment law.

We will switch heating system for heater on from 1st November. (Our bathroom heating floor need to warm - to warm our feet... :D )

Furniture restoration/hobby work in garage will be end on end of October and put away & clean to prepare for 2 cars go in our garage. We leave our 2 cars outside of our garage property for our hobby in beginning of April and then get our cars back in garage end of October. I use small craftworks/small restoration at hobby room in the basement...

We will empty & transfer 2 x 300 litres (600 pints) water from rainwater ton at our yard to other rainwater ton in the basement this weekends. We use them to water steam iron & green plants. We clean & cut fruit trees, bushes, etc. at our garden & vegetable house, too to prepare for winter time.

RR..

Very good thread to discussion and insight to bring the news to have ppl aware of heating costs.. Since the gas/oil price are high..

We are prepare and signed Agreement with our heating company (Gas).. to have budget plans so we wont be broke and shut off.. but there are new law last year that the gas/elec cant shut off between Oct 17-April I think...

so its gonna be 70% more than your regular costs..

We agreed to drop our regular temp in the house.. normally 69.. to 66, we already asked our landlord to replace the thermosat.. cuz its old--get new one it will saves you alot.. cuz it set up for you.. what you want at night and during day..

Since we are renting in this house.. If we own the house, I would install wood stove or fire place.. I found out.. Corn Pellet is longer burning than wood.. so.. money wise save..

Good luck you guys in the winter..

interesting Liebing..

LOL i did wrote the list to prepare for the winter..

pull out the flowers after dry/dead

put tractor/mower in storage (other building)

Some states offers heating assistance programs. Better apply for them before the funds runs out!!! More people now qualified for the assistance because of income requirements have been increased.

My rent home is poor condition but we are usually buy plastic window covers the all windows and also kept the cold stay outside don't let cold leak into my house. Cover the plastic thick window curb for basement to prevent snow goes through falling down in the pile snow.. Cover it.. (hard explain) LOL
Insecure checked... filter heater replace, heater set on (wish have automatic thermostat), lot lot blankets and set up christmas lighting before winter comes.. but already christmas lighting still sitting there for long time.. LOL Lazy remove it and put it on.. prefer stay sitting there rest of season.. When winter comes in..I will *click remote control turn on the xmas lights* :D Pretty cool it's new from last year.
Hydro and heater are equity program payments for winter through... when winter is finished, what left the balance.. rest pay off.. I love this system.. :D
I guess so that's all I have...

yeah Liebling, So am I and thought for everyone general.. *shrugs* So I'm embrasement!

I don't think I need my place winterised for now. I've not started using the heater now. Maybe I'll after December during night times. I still am wearing shorts! :D I've not seen snow in years just occasion flurries! :D

use heater... not use gas, cause bills will go high. :(

and put puppy Britney in playroom... to be warm and not
stay outside cold. :P

-Pull out the blankets that we have been stored away over the spring and summer seasons.

-Replace the storage box with most of shorts (not all-- sometime we do get HEAT wave in wintertime!).

-Stock up on thick socks, or knit own thick stockings.
(last winter, I knitted scarfs and hats for my family! Now I might as well learn how to knit socks and mittens!)

im not really doing anything except for shopping for warmer clothes, and bringing out the blankets. thats about it. we dont really get snow here. once in a blue moon we will have snow flakes, but nothing on the ground. it melts before it hits the ground

We get our firewood ready for the wood stove.

It is the same way around here. It does get really cold late at night times.
