Hi everybody! I have a very important question that I would like to ask everybody to see if anybody may know something or someone in a similiar situation that was able to receive any form of positive help.

:aw:

My Aunt is deaf and mute and has been this way since age 7. She is now in her mid-70's. What had happened at age 7 was that she was living in Iran on a farm and always had a lot of family around. There was a barn that was always pitch black inside and amongst the kids they would say the devil is in there because they would hear owls making noises, etc, etc. Well, one day they decided to throw my aunt in there, lock the door, and laugh and scream to her that the devil was in there and he's coming to get you. From what I have been told, she screamed herself to deaf....

She saw doctors in Iran, but I believe she may have been wrongly diagnosed. I do not believe she saw a specialist in the states when she arrived in 1975. My question...I have been told (long shot) that this be psychological or that there have been many more advances in medicine since then. Is this something I should pursue? Again, this is almost 70 years after the fact...

My aunt never wanted to learn sign language (ego) and never really learned the american language as well. She is fluent in her native tongue and understands lip reading, face and hand gestures, etc, etc...She is truely a sweetheart and the most innocent person I have ever met...Is there anything out there that can possibly help? Thanks in advance and much respect to the community.

Just got done speaking with my mother. Apparently, she hit her head on a rock while she was in the barn. She has seen specialists in NY when she first got here and was advised that nothing can be done AT THAT TIME. I am hoping there have been major advances since then... Thanks again!

I'm sorry. I have no answer to your question...but I wanted to welcome you and offer my sympathies to your Aunt. I want to suggest something, and I hope I don't offend...your aunt's been deaf most of her life. It may be a little hard on an elderly person to be put through such a trail to find out if it can be fixed at this point, unless she has a desire to hear. Not everyone who is deaf wants to hear. (This is not me personally, but I know it to be true). I hope I didn't offend, just trying to help. I am sure that your aunt appriecates your love and respect towards her! You sound so nice to care for her like you obviously do!
