Would like an old rusty, ugly Jeep

New generation of designers. Most young folks these days think the older designs are boring, so they are going to make new cars appeal to today's generation.

And, yes, I agree, it is butt ugly.
 
I don't care how it looks but I can tell you I'd be pretty annoyed having to walk back up the trail to pick up all the plastic parts that are gonna fall off the first time I took it up to camp. I don't know how anything can be trail rated if it doesn't even have a metal bumper.

It's embarrassing! I'll hang on to my 2000 Cherokee for as long as possible.

To me, the Grand Cherokee never had anything in common with the real Jeep Cherokee except the name.

My '96 is great. reasonable gas mileage and enough power to haul a trailer of firewood and I can fit the snow blower in the back with the seat down. I can go shopping with it or drive down the old logging roads to my hunting spots. It's not huge and it's not small.

I had a very basic '95 that I loved, until someone broadsided me and totaled it. :(

My dad has the first official Jeep Cherokee that was imported into the UK in 1992. Chrysler were just trying to see what the UK market was like.
He bought it for 19,000 pounds sterling, ran it for a year, then sold it for 20,000 with 30k miles on the clock!
He liked the car, just didn't like the terrible fuel bill or the shocking build quality.
It must have made an impression though, he went out and bought a diesal grand cherokee a few years later which he was a lot happier with.
 
I wish they had diesel here. Nothing wrong with the build quality with mine. 17 years old 210,000 miles and the only thing besides some general maintenance I did was put a lift in it. Gas could be a bit better but it still gets 20mpg with my normal sized tires on it. Not to bad for the era it came from.
 
I forgot the real cons of having 92 or earlier Cherokee got lower MPG than later models. I believe 93 or 94 they did improve the mileage, switch from Carb version to Fuel Injection during that time. (I'm speaking for 4.0L not 2.5L)

Not going buy that Cherokee until they redesign them to "Timeless" style.

Just checked on www.cars.com and found 26 of them that you (Derek) likes. I kinda of like the look, looks damn rugged. Overall, only about 690 are up for sale, which makes these cherokees even rarer.

I was told that 94 is the best model year of all.

Hmmm yeah people say the earlier cars were the worse - tho you get that with every model. I think my dad was getting around 15 MilesPerGallon and I think that was one of the pre-production fuel-injection cars.
15mpg aint bad though, I was getting 18mpg in a V6 Ford Granada Scorpio 4x4 (Merkur Scorpio for you guys over the pond) at the time.

Plenty of the earlier Jeep Cherokees Down Under though, people here don't mind the economy, and LPG kits are easily available. If I wasn't so much of a Land-Rover nut I'd have one tomorrow!

How do you search by years on cars.com. I wish there was a feature where you would search from oldest to newest like E Bay does.

Those rugged looks are cool. Kind of rugged like I am.
 
On left pane, you will see various search topics you want to select, click Years, it will then drop down few years, the last on the drop down list "Choose more than one", then a dialog box will show up, you check for each year you want to search. Bam, there you go. :)

BTW, manual transmission Cherokee for sale, only 22 available. Even though one said manual, but the picture shows its automatics so Im not counting as 23. I can tell the difference between auto and manual tranny.

See, Jeeps are a heck of a lot more plentiful, and even the last two generations of Jeeps have parts still made and available for them by Jeep. Check THIS out - Kaiser Willys Jeep Blog Home and click on Shop Willys Jeep Parts - you'll find nearly everything, even tubs to replace rusted out CJ-2A bodies! There's all kinds of forums you can go to, to connect with people in your town to get together for Jeep trips into the country for camping or fund raisers to raise money for causes, or even just to hang out for dinner somewhere local.

For your social fix, go to Jeep Wrangler Forum - Jeep Wrangler Owners Community or go to Jeep Forum - Jeep Enthusiast Network if you have something else instead.
 
Yes, parts is very easy to get for these model, even the first model year, parts STILL available. Only two Jeep models so far that can get replacement parts easy, that is Cherokee family, and Wrangler family.

The problem with late Cherokee model is that their body is Unibody (Without separate frame) and once unibody built in frame is rot or shot then that is a major problem. I am not sure when Unibody design started. I had my Cherokee front axle bracket rot out. Almost lost front axle while driving. Glad I found the problem and fix it by welding it. Was told it is very common problem. Oh well.

Might not have even been that rusty. Some of them had a recall where they welded on reinforcement on the frame rail where the lower control arm mounted because there was some reason they where weak.

Unibody can be a problem if you flex it off road all the time. They make frame stiffeners for the XJ to keep the seams from cracking. For most people as long as you don't point load it then it's not an issue. Conventional frames rot just like unibody. I have broken more than one old rotted Toyota in half rock crawling.
 
Unibody means whole body itself build-in with engineered frame as opposed with body on frame. Frame for body on frame is available on Jeep, you can buy frame itself and replaced them, impossible with unibody.

Yes, you can replace the frame but by the time the frame is rotted so is most everything else. I built a shortened frame for a friends Toyota pickup to make it CJ length. (the bed ended up 4 feet long) It took me a week to build the frame and it took us 3 weeks to put the truck on it.

Run new brake lines
Run new gas lines
Swap over axles/control arms
Swap over shocks
Swap over frame mounted steering components
Swap over exhaust
Swap over cross members
Swap over transmission and transfercase
Swap drive shafts
Pull wiring harness from bed
Swap bed
Swap cab
Rerun bed wires
Swap motor
Double check everything and do an alignment

Not worth it unless it's a vehicle you really like. CJs and Wranglers are not to bad to swap but try a rusty Toyota where every bolt is rusted in solid and it's a nightmare.

Plus for that much work you can strip a unibody and weld plate steel over the frame rails as long as you haven't twisted the whole thing up too much off roading it.
 
I used to have 69' Kaiser (Chevrolet) DJ-5 Jeep which was formerly Postal Jeep. 130hp 4 cylinder with 2 speed powerglide tranny. Post Office sold those DJ-5 either Kaiser or AMC because of tip over danger and fire hazard (if tipped over right side and gas can leak through cap on right rear cause fire). It was like an armor truck some sort cuz I had accident with 1985 Ford Escort. Ford Escort was total loss and body looked twisted after spining and slaming against rail twice (Ford Escort was speeding at 60mph over 45mph limit and I was slowing down from ramp at 15 mph). My jeep had 1/4 broken thick bumper and bent front left fender which bent back quickly with help from officer and I drove off without any ticket.

I had Graduation party at my friend and 10 people were on top of hood and roof of my jeep jumping and dancing. It doesn't cave in or put dent on anything too. I love this jeep and planning to convert to 4x4 and swap to CJ-5 body which I saw at junkyard for $300 in excellent shape. But after 1st tip over accident, Tow truck did really lousy job rolling over my jeep like a dice that pissed me big time. It was damaged plus bent rear left wheel by tow driver. I was in college at that time.

The Kaiser DJ-5 isn't safe for 70mph highway driving because of flat front window which can lift front wheels off the road and I was driving 73 mph on straight highway and wanted to change lane, I went :eek2: when I turn steering, it still go straight, I was very lucky that there are no bend on highway that I could have went off the road and tumble like a cube :rofl:
