I called thru the VRS to my unemployment office because I farked up w/ a questionnaire that I have never seen before.

The questionnaire was about asking if I would consider taking a job training program, in some of the questions being asked, I had a hard time understanding what they trying to ask about. So after carefully trying to figure it out, I submitted my answers.

Next day my voucher was suspended.

So I called the office via VRS using the TTY number and the person who answered the phone said she wants TTY, not VRS and never heard of the service before and she put me on hold. Then the interpreter overheard her talking to someone else and the other person said that I'm faking deaf.:shock::shock::shock:

The interpreter had to explain how the service works and he can see me on the screen and that I am using sign language.

What infuriates me is how ignorant these people are and the lack of comprehension skill they are displaying. Apparently they are not tech savvy.

After all the BS I had to wade through, she finally figures out that I made a mistake in answer the questionnaire that I am currently taking job training in which I am not. So she said it may take a day or two to release the money to me. Why not now????

At first she wanted me to come to her office in downtown Indy, I said my car has transmission problems and on top of that my wife who has been suffering major health problems with a congestive heart failure, renal failure, respiratory arrest and a stroke. She wears a tract in her throat and need constant supervision. If I stay out of the house too long, she may end up with a problem that if I'm not there to correct it, she may suffer more permanent damage or death (i.e. mucus could clog up her trait and she could suffocate and die if I don't suction it out as one example)

So she said she will contact her supervisor and hopefully in the next morning the payment will be released to me.

WTF? Of all the ignorance I have to deal with a government entity who lack serious tech savvy. They need to get with the times regarding deaf technologies. TTYs are becoming a thing of past as computers and VRS are becoming more mainstream.

Want to know what's even more funny? Hackers and Crackers are very up to date in technologies whereas the Feds have a hard time keeping up with them to track down computer crimes. With billions of taxpayer dollars flowing into the government, their systems is like 10 years behind the times.

VRS has undergone several funding cuts lately. They are attempting to work with minimal funding.

Well they need to stop spending money on the war overseas and bring the boys home. Then divert the money to where it is really needed the most.

Governments is pork spending on crap we don't even need. This is ridiculous.

First of all, why did you call VRS if it's number for TTY instead vocie. They have right to doubt what's going on. She requested you to use TTY since you dialed the number that directed to TTY.

Whoa! these responses to thread have nothing to with VRS funding, what the creator said is that he or she is so frustrated that whoever answer his/her call at the employment center refused to take VRS calls, and limit to TTY only, none of them have anything to do with funds.

Like other person had trouble calling Wells Fargo, that bank refused to take VRS calls, limit only TTY...

Im seeing more and more problems with this, it has to do with stupid scammers that cause mistrust at various agencies with relay operators.

They are making new policies to ban these VRS calls, I have noticed.... which I don't like and that's a stupid thing to do, these people need to know that TTy is history, capcise?

Because I no longer have one. It broke on me months before I got VRS.

What I don't get is how can someone scam someone using VRS when an interpreter can SEE the deaf person on the screen using sign language???

I've heard of the scams from people pretending to be deaf using the WEB interpreter service such as the AT&T relay. But this is a different technology and making policies against such technology is downright discrimination!!

I think we need to start writing to Congress regarding this and make it against the law to ban VRS.

It isn't that easy. The government cannot just take funds alloted for one purpose and give them to another agency for a different purpose.

Before VRS exist, business have no aware of TTY to use. It become spread so late. Yet, they mostly don't know about VRS.

Good point there. Just wish people isn't so slow in keeping up with our top of the line technologies that we use everyday.

It's not only frustrating, it's downright annoying as well.

We're basically pretty much out of sight and out of mind.

In regards of government cracking down on funding VRS - The big reason is the VRS providers abused the funding.... making fake calls from intraagency.

Viable is a good example of this.

So that mean VRS deserves to go out of business and we go back to TTY where it's slow and annoying?

Sure, it's good the government is cracking down on fraud, that'll straighten up the rest of the companies to stay honest at all times.

The VRS companies who started up from a fraud should be closed, in my opinion. The honest ones should go on and keep doing what they do.

All of the above. :)

Im not sure about HOVRS. So I am not including that.

Um... No crap.

Our deafness is invisible. Not to mention the Deaf culture itself is probably around 1% of the American population if I can borrow Gallaudet's estimate on how many ASL users there are. I wouldn't be surprised if TTY (or other form of text-based relays) is on par with VRS considering how many people out there don't know sign language, but are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

No matter how we go about it, it's a constant uphill battle.
