TAMPA, Fla. - The driver and the child in her lap survived when a pickup truck slammed into a 1,500-gallon (5,680-litre) aquarium at Tampa International Airport. The tropical fish were not so lucky.

Airport officials say 36-year-old Yamile Campuzano-Martine lost control of her truck and drove into the saltwater tank outside the American Airlines baggage claim Monday night. Airport spokeswoman Brenda Geoghagan said the driver had an unrestrained 6-year-old boy in her lap.

About 90 per cent of the 30 to 40 saltwater fish in the tank were killed.

The aquarium was part of a public art program.

Campuzano-Martine was cited for careless driving. No number was listed for her in public records.

The part that floors me is the fact that her kid was on her lap. Why do some people have children?

That's going to be expensive to replace. Hope that she has enough insurance. Glad the kid's ok. Ticket her for not having her kid in a car seat, too.

I hope they send her the bill for replacing the aquarium and the fishes that were in it.

I guess she was trying to copy Britney Spears. ;)

They should have added child endangerment since most states require child restraint in any vehicle even as old as six... the child should've been in front or back seat on a booster chair with seat belt at least.

Stupid woman.

I'm glad the child is safe. I was afraid I'd be reading about how the child got all cut up.. Too bad about the fish..

I do think the mother should be ticketed for not having the child in a passenger seat with seat belt on.

I'm sure she's looking at a lawsuit on the behalf of all those poor fish. :giggle:
