Woman offered job gets denied due to peanut allergy

Pink peppercorn is used a LOT in perfumes. It's related to cashews, which is why people who have an allergy to cashews usually can't eat pink peppercorn. it's also related to sumac, which is in Indian food quite often. Sumac is also related to poison ivy, and people with nut allergies (well, cashew isn't a nut but it's lumped into that general nut allergy description) can have far worse reactions to poison ivy exposure. People allergic to cashews can also be allergic to mango, as they are related. People with almond allergies (almonds, again, aren't nuts) can also be allergic to stone fruits since they are related. The flavoring in Honey Nut Cheerios actually comes from peach and plum pits, as the flavor is so similar. They changed the recipe in 2007 from almonds to extracts from the peaches or plums. If you're allergic to latex, you should avoid eating kiwi and banana, since natural latex is made from rubber trees and kiwi and bananas are related to the rubber tree.

Knowing how these things are related can help you avoid exposure (if you get slight reactions to mangos and you're allergic to cashews, for instance, stop because you're just leading yourself to anaphylaxis). And if you're allergic to nuts, you can ask when you go eat somewhere if anything is seasoned with pink peppercorn and avoid it. Pink peppercorn is not an actual pepper like black pepper is or probably white pepper too, which is why black pepper won't trigger a reaction in someone who is allergic to cashews.

yeah, I've noticed that, too Jane - they can hide things in little letters or in a list of ingredients, hoping that people don't actually look beyond the pretty packaging or the front of the container. Due to my various sensitivities and reactions, I routinely look at any ingredients listing or nutrition panel, or ask what's in something if it's not listed <more so food-related, there>.

I use un-scented, aluminum-free tea deodorant from Alba Botanica and avoid anti-perspirant as you're supposed to be able to sweat, I don't like preventing that altogether.

Eater, :ty: that was very informative! I didn't know about the connections of all those things:)
