WAVY TV 10 - News, Weather, Traffic, Sports for Hampton Roads, Virginia - North Eastern North Carolina - Woman leaves millions to university for the deaf

Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., has received more than six million dollars from a Fredericksburg woman who left the bulk of her estate to the university for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Virginia May Binns, a bacteriologist, was 89 when she died last year.

The money will be used to help fund a new language and communication center at the school.

Gallaudet President Robert Davila says the school is fortunate to receive significant gifts from Binns and others like her who recognize its prestige and impact on communities worldwide, even though they did not attend the school.

Good thing she didn't leave it to AGBAD, hehe.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! LOL on AGBAD!

Whoooo hooo!!! That's awesome!

Ah, That is great to know Gallaudet is receiving the fund to put to use.

I just hope Gallaudet will use it wisely.

Wel, guess to what use Gallaudet will put this money?

Oh and I gotta say that I think there's somewhat of a difference in private funding between oral deaf and Sign using Deaf education. It does seem like oral deaf schools tend to attract a lot of private funds, whereas Deaf schools tend to be dependant on public funding.

The money will be used to help fund a new language and communication center at the school. From the OP.

Yup and there's quite the furor over there. First of all it is going to be in the Sorenson name just because that company put up a few mil of, I believe the 26 mil it's gonna cost to build. I think they have broken ground. The point of contention there now seems to be that programs having to do with the ears and speech will take up 3/4 of the total space and ASL/Deaf culture a quarter.

Then there needs to be a furor!
