Linux and BSD are free. Plus they both run well on old, slow machines. If you're looking at cost, it's pretty tough to beat the open source operating systems.

I dont trust most Microsoft programs. I can trick a person to destroy his own Windows XP because of a security exploit MS won't fix.

Are you sure Linux and BSD are free? How can they keep their business up?

There is no such a "free lunch"!

Absolutely free! Even better, since these are Open Source, you can even copy and modify the actual source code. If you need the operating system to do something specific, you can write it into the kernel (of course, this isn't something that everyone has the programming skills to do, but unless you work for M$, you could never modify Windows, regardless of how good you are at programming).

"Linux" and "BSD" are not owned by businesses. They are managed by communities of volunteers. There are companies who make money from these operating systems by selling training, support and even "distributions" (which are packages that make it easier or more convenient to install).

There is lots of software that is free. Most web sites on the internet run on Apache, which is also 100% free. The next time you send an email message, most likely it will be routed through at least one server running SendMail, also an open source program.

Sorry to sound like I'm preaching, but there's a ton of really good software out there that's free. But since there isn't a company with billions of dollars to promote it, many people never hear about it.

:werd: I've tried Win3.1, Win 95, Win 98, Win 2000, Win NT, and Win XP so far. None of them is "perfect" for my taste. Heh.

:pats on todd_run's head: Good job!

OSX is based off FreeBSD. OSX costs are ripping off FreeBSD just like Windows 2000 ripped off FreeBSD's TCP/IP stack codes. Microsoft never paid off FreeBSD "group of volunteers" for this TCP/IP stack codes. I believe Apple is doing the same for the entire BSD Operating System codes. :/

No..I'm saying that Apple did the same thing as Microsoft when it came to using BSD's codes. The only difference is Microsoft used little of the code compared to Apple which used almost in entire. Both didn't pay.

I agree with you, ChelEler - none of the windows platforms are perfect at all. Every single Operating System have crashed no matter how careful I was with modifying or not modifying any system files, etc.

Nothing in the entire world's perfect at all... ;)

I don't think you have tried EVERY Operating Systems.

If you modified and it crashed....you abused. :D

It's just like a car....take a good care of it...it'll last very long time.

Abuse it.....it'll be found on the road waiting for a tow truck.
