DEAR WIKIPEDIA READERS, we'll get right to it: only 1 day left in 2014 to help Wikipedia. To protect our independence, we'll never run ads. We survive on donations averaging about $15. Only a tiny portion of our readers give. If everyone reading this right now gave $3, our fundraiser would be done within an hour. That’s right, the price of a cup of coffee is all we need. We’re a small non-profit with costs of a top website: servers, staff and programs. Wikipedia is something special, like a library or a public park where we can all go to learn. If Wikipedia is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online and ad-free. Thank you.

Shit,,, I pay Sales taxes because i have to.
 
I donated to mozilla (firefox) because i use thier browser. I don't use wikipedia much. To unreliable.
 
Its like PBS. I never Pledge. Why Pledge when i can watch it for free. But HBO forces me to pay.
 
?? what does paying sales tax have to do with a Wiki pop up asking for donations?

Unfortunately with the internet these days there's going to be stuff like that where many sites that provide services for free still need to have some kind of overhead to PAY for servers, employees etc... so they gotta find some way of getting money.

They're not forcing you to so why whine?

There is no sale tax when donate to any organizations.

Hate sale tax? You could move to Oregon or Delaware.

No, having HBO is optional and it is premium channel without commercial, so no one is going force you to pay for HBO service.

Right,,HBO is like an Box Office. You cant go though the gate without paying. PBS is like a church you can walk in watch and enjoy and pass the collection plate down.
 
They only ask people to donate money too keep AD free. Why do you think there is AD here is for? Servers costs money and many depends on AD to help with the costs. Same concepts with commercials we see on TV.

Donation is optional and they are not forcing you to give money. It's up to you to give money or not.

why are you moaning and whining? you want freebies? well you think the SSI benefit you're collecting is free? It came from my hard-earned money and other people's money too.

whining about PS/XBOX gaming network going down and now this? quit yo' yapping and do something!

Funding for PBS programs comes from a variety of sources - member stations' dues, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, government agencies, foundations, corporations and private citizens.

In addition to seeking foundation and corporate support, producers are able to seek production funding through PBS. Though some submissions may not be priorities for funding, we encourage producers whose projects meet our content goals to seek alternative financing to cover the full cost of production and to submit their projects at rough cut or completion.

Aside from the general fund, PBS also disburses production dollars through a jointly managed Program Challenge Fund with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

If you want free food, grow your own. There is no rule against it.

Why should Wikipedia be free? How would they cover the expenses of the business? Should everyone there work for free? How would they feed their families?

Without donation and funding, there will be no PBS or running with heavy commercial.

You should research about how capitalism works.

If you want everything free so you should elect the socialist or communist government.

I wanted to grow my own food in Berkley, California so I brought a house with a yard big enough to grow my own veggies . I brought the seeds and tools b/c they never fall out of the sky for 'free'. :giggle:

I saw Wiki asking for money and won't give them anything until their reputation changes. FireFox is getting weird these days and I'm beginning to be cautious with them. I started using Safari sporadically until they go down the tubes.
