Why Sorenson VRS refuse

Phillip, My friend works at Sorenson, I will have him write what he has to say about the Sorenson. This is the friend of lilylover72. I work at Sorenson for a while. I am part of the Customer Service that handles such thing like phone number changes. I would like to express your concern that I completely understand about the refusal of the number change. I mainly suggest three options before having a supervisor's approval before proceeding with the phone number changes. Those three options are, setting a lightring that helps blocks the incoming calls for that certain person wherefore you will not see the light flashing with only an exception of the missed call appearing on. Then you could delete it off without any hassles. The second option is reporting the harrasser to local police department where the person resides. If that does not stop the person harrassing you, then we will proceed with the approval from the supervisor. The main reason why we do encourage those two options before the final options because of the FCC's mandate. We do get portion of the funding from FCC and the batch of the phone numbers that are made available to us from FCC itself. However, we are working around the clock with the FCC mandate, giving all deafies the numbers. Yes, we do get overwhelming calls, and complaints about the phone number changes. We record every complaints for the other department to oversee how much volume of the complaints. We also have deadline by Dec 31st to get all the new phone numbers given to customers like us. We are having some developments underway for next year that would give us options to change the phone number, but we only have limited amount of the phone numbers available to us to help all of the customers all over the country. If we do change more than the available numbers for every customers, we would run out of the limited batch of the numbers, then we all would not be able to give out more numbers until next batch of the available phone numbers to arrive.

That s cool! :ty: A person and I were solved and don't bother me again! :)

Mrs bucket - i agree with you. however i understand why VRS wont since FCC simply WILL NOT pay them to handle calls canada to canada.FCC does not currently collect FCC fees from canadians. Therefore its not fair to USA fcc payees to pay for canadain services. FCC is USA regulation. VRS like Sorenson have tried to get various groups in Canada to sponser this and pay for the services. They all said no. Idiots!! VRS even tried a pilot program and it failed. Don't they realize that hearies can make a call to thier deaf loved one or deaf can make an emergency calls and Canada authiries can save a life ? IS this thier philosofy ? deaf lives are trivial ? Canadains have a right to a life too!! Canada just dont have a group like FCC to pay for this service. USA VRS's ALREADY have the services and hardware in place!! It just a matter of Canadain goverment to create some sort of a fund to pay for VRS calls within thier own country. VRS can handle the accounting headaches since they already have the equipment to do so. they just need to add that thats all. I dare anyone to poke holes in this idea other then collecting the funds. If anything, it will benefit everyone. More money for VRS, more available terps, sharing of communications of deaf and hearing regardless where you are in the northern continent, less waiting time for terp...etc..
Now all this is based on what i think i know and this is my opinion only.

Canada has a FCC-like agency and it is called Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commssion (CRTC).

They already gave Bell Canada and Telus license to provide VRS last January. The major drawback about their services are they are available for Ontario and Quebec (Bell Canada) and Alberta and B.C. (Telus). It means Six provinces and three territories do not have this kind of service for people who needs access to VRS. I do not know when Bell Canada and Telus will commence their VRS. Soon or later I will find out more when I ask around my friends who are deeply involved in this matter. The Canadian Association of the Deaf and Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf (CCSD) formed a new VRS called Signs Relay Canada (SRC) that they wanted to provide to Deaf Canadians across the country, but unfortunately the CRTC did not give them a license. Why? Because the CRTC had to follow their policy to give ILECs (Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers) first choice to get license in order to provide any new service like VRS.

The Sorenson VRS has had at least four call centers which provides to American citizens only, in Canada and their locations are Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto. They are considering to expand their call centers to Halifax, Montreal and Ottawa. Last month I went to their information session that Mr. Ron Burdett provided and it was interesting to learn some stuffs about the company. Also He said the Sorenson Communications established a child company called Sorenson Communications Canada and applied for a license to provide a license to run VRS across Canada. Should they receive a license from CRTC, the Deaf Canadians will get new free VP-200s. The announcement from CRTC and Sorenson Communications should come very soon.

Well, obviously the reasons are laws....wish Canada could set up their own and I'm wondering why they haven't thus far....Somebody set a fire under Henry Vlug!

FYI I already have exchanged a few emails with Henry whom I have known for about 15 years about the VRS issues. I am quite confident that he is well-aware of it.

When it will release the information about VRS in Canada and be ready services for Deaf people needs access for VRS. I'm from Alberta, Canada by the way need to know more about telus info?
Will you?
Thanks!

Ok, sure; I was half kidding Mrs Bucket because I used to know Henry, too about 40 years ago. He was a great guy then!
