Why is it hard for police to deal with deaf people on routine stops?

I wonder because many people drive cars with turbocharged engine. You see, if the person wasn't deaf, the police would simply tell the person to be more careful. You know if your car is turbocharged, we'll be watching you. Don't speed.

My point is that not many cops know how to fingerspell let alone use ASL. I imagine that people would get upset having to fingerspell "turbocharged" especially if they don't know the alphabets.

If someone had a Volvo 850 turbo or Saab 900 turbo, would it be a good idea for cop to get the driver out. Point to word "turbo" on side or rear of vehicle. You know, shake your head and point to "turbo". Just to let deaf people know that turbo are not good thing to have on road.

The problem is what if a vehicle is so old that the word "turbo" has fallen off the vehicle? How would cop be able to point to "turbo" to explain to the person that turbo is not a good thing to have on the road?

Is it a good idea to keep the turbo decal on your vehicle? That way, if you're stopped, cop would have something to point at.

If there is no turbo decals on the vehicle, can a cop tell you to open the hood? Cop would point to the turbo lettering on your engine to let you know that turbo is not accepted.

Turbo is bad?

So you are some sort of James Dean type rebel??

turbo is the best thing ever. EVER!!!

Not everyone will agree. Just trying to figure best ways for cops to let deaf people know that turbo is not a good thing to have on road.

i would think old turbo charge on the road stop by cops then idiot not hard word to finger spell unfortunatly the deaf dont always spell it properly when they got clap out old car on the road

Just make sure that deaf people have their clapping cats with them. That ought to solve the problem since deaf people do teach their cats ASL which in turn the cops understand cats in ASL.

maybe cops met wrong deaf people who have stink attitudes. :dunno:

A cop was directing traffic and he told me to "GO" but I did not hear him.
The cop came up to my car and yelled "ARE YOU DEAF OR SOMETHING!"
I told the cop " NO I am not deaf , I am HOH" That cop walked away say nothing. Maybe that cop will think twice before doing that again. The cop was the one with the "stink attitudes" not me.

LOL your attitude was still giving a cop a hard time because you corrected COP.

I don't know, maybe they could just write what they want to say down during the traffic stop? Seems to be the most logical approach to the communication barrier.

Being nice and polite even though they may be ruining your life. They can get way worse.

No the cop should had been giving hands signals to tell people when to stop or go. A smart does this , they do not have to move or yell ,they just use their hands and they wear a glove so see their easier.

The reason why he was yelling to you when approached to your car was asking if you are Deaf or Something (senile or crazy).

Your response was suppose to say "Yes, I am deaf." as you could not hear what he said "GO". So therefore you are deaf when you could not hear him. It does not matter if you are Hard Of Hearing or Deaf you could not hear him say "GO".

Okay, I'm confused....

I clicked this thread expecting the discussion about how cop deal with deaf drivers that they pulled off. But it's actually it's about how can cop communicate "turbocharged" to deaf driver. Huh, what?

I was pulled over many times because I was speeding and my car isn't even have turbo. They usually tell me slow down with similar to "relax" sign language - if they don't want to tell me to slow down, they'd just slap me with speed ticket.

I do not recall you being in the car with me when this happen. So how the Hell you know what happen??

Wirelessly posted

I have a restriction on my license so they know I'm Deaf. Haven't had an issue with beibg pulled over when I do really. Most officers seem to be very understanding and patient. It only becomes a bit difficult at night and it's harder for me to lip read.... but even then the officers here in my experience have always been pretty great. :)
