Why I don't like most hearing males?

As a deaf young man, I don't like most hearing males because most of them don't respect Deaf Culture and most of them are lazy to learn ASL.

I don't know about deaf young woman who don't like most hearing women. Honestly, I never heard about this.
 
I don't think it's a "hearing male" thing but more of a "privileged male thing". I don't really WANT to stand up for them, but I do have to ask. How is not learning ASL lazy, especially if they do not know anyone who speaks it or is around it? I don't know anyone who is Greek or speaks it fluently, does it make me lazy because I haven't learned how to speak the Greek language?
 
Not surprised. I met many ASL learners who are hearing women and very few of them are hearing men. In my opinion, why very few hearing men willing to learn ASL? I think most hearing men are lazy to learn ASL. I heard stories about often time most hearing fathers aren't willing to learn ASL and aren't willing to teach their children about things related to the real world. I feel that most hearing males don't seem to respect Deaf Culture.
 
That may be the case. I can't really help back this up, since I work in a special needs classroom and all of the men (in their 20s and 30s) use or are learning ASL. I guess it's different in other professions...

Are you serious ? If we where to follow your logic 'most hearing males ' should be learning every language spoken on earth too. Why should they have to only learn ASL and not Russian etc? I can see if this was people in your family not wanting to learn ASL but you can 't expect people to learn ASL so you can talk to them. I am hoh and I do not hate hearing women or men.

I struggle to hear even with a hearing aid. The HOH tag is basically BS. I rely mostly on lip reading because I am still functioning in the mainstream society where very few are using ASL.

Am I wrong to assume that most of the Deaf Culture who use ASL are dropouts from the mainstream society?
 
Most of the guys would prefer to be adding turbo to their engine over learning ASL. Don't get offended if they don't want to learn ASL. I make a lot of deals with guys who doesn't want to learn ASL.

Just think of this: if they were too busy learning ASL, then they wouldn't have time to find nice bikes. I wouldn't want ASL to be interfering with bike business.

Exactly what I was thinking. I am the only one deaf in my family. None of my friends are deaf. I actually have never met a deaf person face to face. My husband and I are learning ASL but very slowly. My youngest daughter shows some interests but she is just super busy with work and school.

Probably need to start looking for an ASL tutor again. The way I think I could learn ASL the best is to have a tutor spend a few hours a day like 3 times a week. I've looked for one for over a year then stopped looking.

I only knew two people wore a HA when I was growing up, I had a speech
therapist and she wore a HA and came to my house . I really liked her a lot b/c she knew what it was like being hoh. My dad got very jealous of her and was afraid she would find out his dirty little secret , that he was abusing me so dad got rid of her. The only other person was a girl I met in JR high school. I learned to read people body language b/c I could not hear them .

For the hearing population to learn ASL is kind of on par with them all learning Latin. What the hell are they going to with it?
 
Very few people are going to learn ASL unless they have to. The deaf culture is at a disadvantage because if they are not able to speak they have to communicate through sign language and if the person they are trying to communicate with does not know ASL the deaf person is going to have a hard time. They can always resort to writing down what they want but that is a slow process. It doesn't mean that the hearing person is lazy or doesn't respect the deaf community, it just means that they haven't found a need to learn sign language and why learn something that you might only use once a year, once a decade or maybe not in your lifetime. If they work for or are in a business that caters to the deaf community, then yes, I would say they are lazy or stupid for not learning sign language, but to lump all hearing men into the lazy category is a little shortsighted. I also agree with Whatdidyousay!s and Ambrosia's comments.
 
Realizing that the vast majority of hearing people that are never ever going to come into contact with a deaf person, therefore learning ASL is useful and prudent as putting screen doors on a submarine and making shit flavored lollipops is a sad outlook on "life"? No sir that's realistic. AND expecting everyone in the world to learn it to accommodate you smacks of an entitled and an infantile look on life.

Not sure how long you've been around, and I don't care enough to look. But the is a huge spectrum of deaf and Deaf and hearing that use this site and our reasons for being here are just as varied.
 
We should not be forced to learn Spanish here as there is growing number of options in a commercial phone (For English press 1, for Spanish press 2). The same applies for ASL to hearing people. There is so many languages out there that we can't expect to know it all.

It's not about hearing males... or females for that matter... if a person is ignorant and not making effort to communicate is wasting my time. There is people out there that is willing to communicate by using paper and pen or using text on the phone (not actual texting but to communicate as you can read).
 
Who wouldn't want to learn ASL to talk to someone with such a big chip on their shoulder?

I actually did not want to reply to that, but here goes.

You said Latin was worthless. I can understand that it is worthless to you as much as makeup is worthless to me. Others find a good use for it, and in some cases it's an imperative tool in their careers. I use ASL daily for my job. It pays me, and quite a few others in my field, very well.

That was my basis for a sad outlook in life. Everything has its time and place.

In regards of the OP, he's partially right. ASL and interpreting classes are usually jampacked with a ratio of like 20:1 female to male ratio. Personally I think it's biological, but not going down that avenue right now.

I should have known better though. Responding to anyone in Texas, outside of Austin... :laugh2:
 
Funny, Here I have only seen one DEAF couple and there is at least one person in every store here that knows ASL. We went to the city just this past week, stopped at subway for dinner and I walked over to McD for my son a Happy Meal. I was ordering from a young black girl and I assume she noticed I couldnt hear and started signing to me ( asked if I was Deaf ) I signed back yes and it all took over from there. There are alot of Hearing folks that know ASL and it really surprised me as I never knew there were so many around us...
