Why do we have to turn off our CI during take-off and landing?

I'm really curious because before I left for a vacation (eons ago), I was told that I have to turn off my CI when the airplane departs and lands. Why?

Also, what happens if you have an MRI with your Cochlear Implant?

I'm really curious to know. Thanks for your answers!

MRI it's magnetic and can pull metal pieces of the implant into your brain.

Who told you this? You don't have to do anything at all when it comes to flying and going through airports.

FYI- I don't have a CI.

I have heard that you cannot have an MRI done when you have a CI- you'd have to have it removed- this was at least true for the older models, I don't know about the more recent ones.

I have never heard of having to turn off your CI on take off (or landing). I do know that many many years ago (I think when I still had analog...) I once was able to hear the cockpit when I put my hearing aids on T switch (telecoil). This doesn't happen anymore though as I now use my T-Coil for listening to my mp3 Player (if I have one lol) and/or iPad. Reminds me...wish I had an iPod or mp3 player for my upcoming trip... Would rather keep my music separate from my iPad...

In addition to what Botti said, I must tell you that all flights that have turned on CI's onboard are destined to a remote airstrip in Antarctica.

Oh that's strange. I can't really remember who told me but it was definitely one medical professional at my hospital.

Don't have to worry about flying, or airport security. As for MRIs Bottesini clearly isn't educated on the topic.

Implants may or may not be approved for some type of MRI, depends on manufacturer and governing health agency.

In the US, Med-El is the only one which is approved for a full 1.5T MRI with the implant fully intact. Others may have a smaller strength MRI with the magnet surgically removed. I only care about the details of Med-El, and I will be having an MRI in about 6 months with it.

I'll have my wife post an update if it rips out of my head.

Pretty rude there. My friend who was explanted had an MRI stopped by the tech when a small leftover piece seemed to be migrating.

Towards the brain...

This is from Cochlear, idiot.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):

MRI magnetic fields can generate potentially harmful forces that may cause tissue damage or demagnetize a cochlear implant magnet. The implanted magnets can also create image artifacts in head scans which can reduce an MRI’s diagnostic value. Removal and replacement of the magnet - without the need for explantation and subsequent re-implantation - is possible with most Nucleus Cochlear Implant

I would never ever tell Botti she is misinformed. I have a CI and am not allowed to have an MRI. I have to wear a medical alert bracelet that states CI.NO MRI.

As for flying, I was a little nervous at first, but had absolutely zero issues with my CI while flying to Maui. Had issues with the wave that knocked me down and broke my leg though:giggle:

Well thank you! I actually am an authority on most things!! :P

I had to take my HA off when going through a check line at an airport years ago. My HA made the metal detector go off.

Good of you to inform.. but that's no reason to call him (or anyone really) an idiot.

There is also no reason for you to do many things such as mock one of our mentally ill members, but I see no reason to comment on it in the course of things.

Your own conscience can guide you as can mine.

That is scary , so you mean the piece could travel into their brain ??

Ahh I don't think many of us are mocking him. So.. if this particular person states something that doesn't make sense or is outright wrong, one can't call them on this behavior just because they're mentally ill? I don't think I have ever called them... or anyone else here a name like idiot when questioning what the hell he (or her) posts.

But then that's my lil ole opinion.. you are free to have yours. Just don't be surprised that people might actually call you out on your own too.

It's not likely. That was pretty isolated with my friend and was actually thought to be a small piece left behind from explant.

The soft tissue damage would likely just be around the implant area .
