Why Deaf use Clapping or Hands Flying??

DItto.

what's more, i really love to listen the loudest clapping. flying hands remind me of the comdey movie that i forget whats it called.

cheerleading girls using flying hands that were so hilarious.

Yeah, im like you, i like the sound of clapping, louder
the better, lol. mmm, i dont remember the movie you talk about
but i will ask around.
Oh, yeah..i have seen cheerleaders do that, i forgot about that, LOL!

Same here, Jolie. What I've been led to believe all these years it that it came from France. Jack is so adamant in his beliefs, it looks like he will say anything. I think the Big D folks are marketing ASL wrongly by challenging Goliath. I would support them more if they would change their tactics instead of pouring so much money "camping out" next to AGB and protesting. Such a waste of time and talent....

I too, believed that it came from France as well.

Well, as for 'marketing' the perspective of ASL to be challenged - I do think they could have done better if they also could have approached it in another way instead of hovering around these issues.

I read this link which comes from one of the comment box on that vlog -- FAQ: History of Visual Applause for the Deaf

Honestly, the "flying hands" look so retarded...and I feel retarded when I do (if I bother, since most of the time I clap instead).

LOL yep ^

From a hearing persons perspective it looks like the sign for "Holy shit get this fucking spider out of my shirt!"

I would prefer clapping, but everyone's flying their hands so I just follow the deaf audience.

I can see that it is kind of misunderstanding on the asumption that hearing audists thought it meant "fly hand" for clapping instead of using the sound of clapping, not knowing that it meant "finish". :rofl2: I found out about that when I was in a Deaf audience watching the Deaf performance and everyone is using the "fly hand" for clapping and I got puzzled over it. I had to go along with them. I still would clap whether at a hearing perfomance or Deaf performance, does not matter to me. Well, anyway, it got stuck and hope it will be unstuck and go back to the sound of clapping again. Geez, those hearing audists jump into thinking what the Deaf person is trying to say. Should have ask the Deaf person what he is doing flexing his hands above his shoulder.

He is expressing happyness, joy, excitement, etc.. expression is everything in Asl.

I've always known about the hands flying thing. I think I learned about that when I went to RIT.

What year? You learned about that you were there.

I was RIT student. I never see anyone's hands flyings before by 1985.
After 1991, We had reunion at MSSD/Gally. They had meeting at audience or classroom. I was going use my hand clapped. My first time, I saw most people raise hands shaked. That's made me feel not comfortable to raise hands shaked. I tried it make me feel very idiot and not comfortable. I prefer hand clapped. Hands clapped still very classic and very manner.

I called VRS. Few times, I have seen interpreter use the hand flying. That's kind ugly image "the hands flying".
I never like the hands flying.

At the Tennessee School for the Deaf, where I attended.... "Flying hands" weren't used until late 1980s/early 1990s. At first I found it kind of awkward, I just followed the audience. I would probably do it again when I am at an audience full of deaf people if they are doing the same.

I have noticed this... Whenever I was at a football game at the Georgia School for the Deaf (GSD) - most of the fans/watchers clapped. Could this be if they did the "flying hands" thing, it would distract both teams? I am trying to remember if the fans/watchers at my school did the same.

He is expressing happyness, joy, excitement, etc.. expression is everything in Asl.

Not to the hearing audist if he/she misread what the Deaf person is trying to say. He is expressing that the hearing speaker on the Oral method would stop and not talking about it. The Deaf person want to say "finish", that is enough. But the hearing speaker or hearing person beside him or who ever thought that the Deaf person meant to applaude with hand flying had misunderstood and it become stuck for no reason. Do you understand what I am saying. If you look at the video of what Jack's Eyes said in ASL, you would be able to understand what is going on about flying hand for clapping. If you saw the video, but not understand what he saying, then you did not know ASL at all. We want the sound of clapping as normal as any hearing people who prefer to clap for the performance well deserved. Okay?

Yes, Why not!!!
I hope they will no more to use hands flying.

You misunderstood. I was just saying there's a lot of negativity in this thread regarding the flying hands. I'm pretty used to the flying hands as I grew up with it.

People just need to stop applying politics to everything.

I remmy one time I went to the show and there was a flying hands and I look around and said to myself "What the heck that mean?" So I asked one of the deaf person and she explained to me. So now I know but I feel awkward to do it cuz I have been clapping my hands since I was little girl. I continue to clap my hands no matter what. Once in a while I will do both.

I really dont care either way. I do whatever I feel at the moment when I cheer for someone...sometimes clapping, sometimes flying hands, or sometimes swinging a beer jug.

Very interesting.. Thanks for sharing! i rather to use hands clapping anyway.
