Expensive? my ass!
If I remember way back in 1998 when I first bought my Packard Bell, it cost me 1,500 for a 233 Pentium, 32 megs of memory, 4 gig HDD, 8 megs of 3D acceleration, CD ROM, a very crappy 14" monitor, a canon inkjet printer.
A year later for the same 1,500, I bought a Gateway 333 Celeron with 64 megs of memory, 8 megs 3D acceleration, 8 gig HDD, DVD ROM, 15" monitor that was much better than the 14" monitor.
Nowadays for 1,500 I get a much more FASTER computer, even the laptops are dropping in price! Moore's Law really proved its mettle when it comes to computing at a bang-for-your-buck price.
Right now I'm shopping for a new desktop-replacement laptop and I've seen, for the same 1,500 that I can get a really nicer laptop with a 3G P4, over 80G HDD, a 64 meg GeForce4GTS-Go or ATI Radeon 9200-9600 3D accelerator, 17" widescreen display, WiFi, DVD/CD burner combo, ports for different memory card/sticks, and 512 megs of RAM. These specs are really amazing considering 2 or 3 years ago they would go for 2,000 to 3,000!
But remember that computers evolve very fast. What is today's technology may be tomorrow's antique!
