Why Computers Expensive?

Actually, computers are cheap. You can get a good computer for $500. Back then, computers took up a whole room, could only add and subtract, and were only available at specific universities and businesses. Now, they're available to everyone at a very low price.

Expensive? my ass!

If I remember way back in 1998 when I first bought my Packard Bell, it cost me 1,500 for a 233 Pentium, 32 megs of memory, 4 gig HDD, 8 megs of 3D acceleration, CD ROM, a very crappy 14" monitor, a canon inkjet printer.

A year later for the same 1,500, I bought a Gateway 333 Celeron with 64 megs of memory, 8 megs 3D acceleration, 8 gig HDD, DVD ROM, 15" monitor that was much better than the 14" monitor.

Nowadays for 1,500 I get a much more FASTER computer, even the laptops are dropping in price! Moore's Law really proved its mettle when it comes to computing at a bang-for-your-buck price.

Right now I'm shopping for a new desktop-replacement laptop and I've seen, for the same 1,500 that I can get a really nicer laptop with a 3G P4, over 80G HDD, a 64 meg GeForce4GTS-Go or ATI Radeon 9200-9600 3D accelerator, 17" widescreen display, WiFi, DVD/CD burner combo, ports for different memory card/sticks, and 512 megs of RAM. These specs are really amazing considering 2 or 3 years ago they would go for 2,000 to 3,000!

But remember that computers evolve very fast. What is today's technology may be tomorrow's antique!

First of all, Walmart are only sell what they buy from companies. Second, they does not make computers. HP, Dell, others makes computers.

PC very expensive? are you outta of your mind?

Hey, I remmy when I was in Hi school, that was very early 80's when first i-8086 (The time when First Apple computer came out). What spec does it have? Lets see, it runs only measly 8MHZ with measly 64k ram, and you need to use floppy disk to start up. For an optional 5 meg hard drive for a price of what? $1,500 dollars!!! Just for hard drive itself!!!! The operation system was good o'le MS-DOS... no graphics in there! But for a system without the optional hard drive it cost $1,500 dollars... I remember that! Now... for 499 dollars, you could get what? 16,000 times more of hard drive space, around 200 times faster CPU speed, 8000 times more of RAM, plus network card or modem (back in 80's optional 1200 baud modem for $500 dollars). Along with Windows, or Lindows you could have fancy graphics, and can watch movies or whatever at your heart desires. So, hence today's computer very expensive? Your definetly out of your mind!

I still have my first computer. A 1977 Comodore P.E.T.! Know anyone into antique computers?

Announced and demonstrated in January of 1977 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, months before the Apple II or Radio Shack TRS80, the Commodore PET was the worlds first "real" computer.

The PET came fully functional out of the box:

a keyboard with a separate numeric pad (almost completely unheard of at the time, even as an option)

a 9" integrated Blue and White monitor

a main board with a powerful new 1Mhz MOS 6502 processor

lots of room for an additional RAM or Processor board

4K of memory

power supply

real storage device (cassette tape)

several expansion ports including an RS232 (serial) port

ability to handle and create fantastic graphics

upper and lower case text

an operating system that was burned onto ROM and loaded on boot... WOW that was cool.

The four kilobyte PET's (yes that is 4096 bytes which equates to a whopping 4096 characters!) were offered through mail order for $495 and a three to six week wait. Immediately orders starting pouring in and so Jack Tramiel quickly adjusted the price to $595. At the same time the $795 8K model was actively promoted and the 4K model was downplayed. I believe they did this by indicating that 8K machines would ship MUCH faster than 4K machines.

Yeah, but Walmart has crappy computers. Everyone I know who got their computers from Walmart had problems. One friend couldn't get off of AOL. Another friend couldn't install any programs. Another friend couldn't even format his computer.

Yeah it wasnt that way in the 1950s. If our hippie parents of the 60s didnt belive all that liberalsm crap by listening to Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and peter paul & mary who were brain washing those hippies who voted for the liberal democratic party we wouldnt be in this mess today.
This is what ruined our society.
