ASL is American Sign Language, it came from America...and so its a National language of Deaf Americans? can any one clarify this?
I mean, if youre an american and you're Deaf, then you must be speaking an American language, right?

It's just a name of language we use. Just like American-born that speak Spanish, he's still American.

Curious, why would it be any different to think about than NZSL, or Auslan??

Why, indeed? When is the last time you got out of the batcave?

A girl on our course said she'd had people asking her why she was learning 'American' sign language and not 'Canadian Sign Language'. The teacher suggested she ask her accuser why they were speaking English outside England.

i do bsl, british sign.all sign develops as time go on like in any langage different words come along.and bsl is not asl .alphbet different for a start,i had friend who could swing from asl bsl fsl with no problems....even in england there different accents up north have some sign that different..e.g if i sign 'new york' the same sign up north would mean shopping...another example is welsh langage it british and second most spoken langage but nothing like english...my grandson first lanage is welsh....i think i confusing myself i leave it at that

So, Do we press one for english when using a TTY?
Sorry, Just couldnt resist...lol

National Language of Deaf Americans just seems like a longer way of saying American Sign Language. I suppose it could be called NLDA, but why, when other countries use the easy way like BSL, NZSL etc?

read it again, and please do have a think about what i actually said....

But I did!! It's not like I enjoy running around announcing "I am stupid!"

My question still stands.

I don't understand what you are talking about!!

Mimsy, how do you know it's a National Language ? can you check it in your domestic websites, information?? im still really quite curious.

ASL (American Sign Language) is North America and also some other countries like South America like Peru. If they sign the same as we always sign ASL, then they are following our ASL signs more understandable. It is not only in United States but Canada, too. We sign in ASL here in Canada.

Quebec only want to sign LQS which is mean Language Quebec Sign which translate into English as French (Quebec) Sign language in Quebec, Canada. Quebec is separate from us English which is why we sign ASL.

I don't know we use the word for National language anymore. We also have another sign language for International Sign Language when Deaf people are traveling to different countries but we have not learn from it yet. It is new to us and probably about to start learning if we want to board to different destinations into different countries.

What about SEE which is Sign Exact English? SEE is not ASL. Totally different. We don't approve of SEE. We would rather use ASL better than SEE.

When I was young after I graduated from high school. I learned how to sign Ameslan (United States) which is almost close to like in ASL but I think ASL is improving better than Ameslan. As long as no hearing schools or anyone to take ASL away from us, Deafies and HOH, we will be fine and hope to continue into the Deaf communities and Deaf Culture. That is all I have to say here. :)

Who cares if you don't approval of SEE. It's one of communication form that deaf people uses. It's no big deal.

I have seen "pro-deaf" mocked my good friends who grew up in oral school where they only taught SEE and they felt hurted. I mean, seriously? I don't care what kind of sign language they use as long I understand them.

we already know SEEe is invented by the hearies...but is ASL a Nationally recognised? really is it??

What do you consider the meaning of "nationally recognized?"

ASL is taught in the schools, and is used in all 50 states, just like English is for the hearing population.

The United States doesn't have any official languages.

So, it depends on how you define "nationally recognized" language. Otherwise, there is no answer to your question.
