Who invented.......

My guess is the cavemen. A point and grunt might get the point across

Ever see Clan of the Cave Bear?

The leader of the tribe had a sign language for "Bend over so I can have sex with you!"

No, I did not see the movie, but it is just a make-believe movie that was conjured up an idea of what the cavemen and cavewomen behaved and how to communicate with each other. That was my first thought that Cavemen during their time might have use the sign language.

Ouch, that is not a nice language to say to his mate in order to have sex, and again it is just make-believe in the movie.

So easy....a "cave man can do it"!....I thought cavemen knocked their woman in the head with a big wodden bat, drug them to their cave and had sex?.....(or have I been watching too many movies?)

I've seen hearies make an obscene gesture with their fingers regarding sex....making an "O" and sticking their finger in it....nasty! Did they make that up...or did a deafie teach it to them....or a "cave man"?

prisoners and slaves

Another place that sign language must have become refined would have been societies built on the use of slaves and prisoners. For instance the Roman Empire where there was a steady stream of slaves coming in from everywhere speaking many languages. People will communicate no matter what it takes. It would be a glad day when it is all done with love.

movie or not, it take a sick mind to make it up.

I would say Indians were the first ones using sign language, probably though Gallaudet invented the American sign language. Agree?

I don't think so because Gallaudet brought the deaf man from France and Indian sign langauge is totally different than ASL. This is true that Indians invented the sign language so that every tribe can sign to be able to understand when each tribe all over North America have different tribal dialect languages. Like for example, Cree langauge is different than Ojibwe language. My husband can speak Ojibwe and I can not speak Cree. I rely only on English and my mother told me that I don't have to learn other languages because I worked hard and am still trying to improve my English writing instead of speech. And maybe you may have a point which I don't know for sure if Gallaudet pick up some signs from the Indians. :dunno2:

I think he is trying to make a point on the oldest communication using sign language and not for the deaf in general. Even though Indian signing is not the same as ASL, I'm sure they found it very useful for their deaf members in their tribe (or aging members for all that matters)

Yes, I know the movie was made-up... but the concept is the same.

It's also a culture issue. Males were considered the dominate gender during those times. Of course, that sign was probably made up... but I'm sure there was something along the lines that were true with that.

Sign language is great for hearing hunters to this very day. No, not ASL, but normal, natural, sign language. Hunters mimic the antlers of deer, point to indicate direction of the animal, give gestures indicating path to follow. They must maintain silence so the prey isnt spooked. It makes one wonder if this is not how early humans thrived? Better hunting - better survival?

Many people who wish to communicate with others who dont speak the same language will communicate by pantomime, gestures and eye contact with negative or positive head movements. It is my thought that this is a very natural form of intuitive communication. Many hearing folks use natural gestures when speaking.

I often catch myself watching an expressive hearing persons gestures - oops - they werent "signing" ha!
