Which is generally cheaper-renting a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment or renting a 3 bed 2 bath house? Keep in mind that we will have animals, and the pricing in Austin is... high. a 3 bed apartment generally runs from 750 to 1000 here..

house is suitable for pet can but apartment too much hassle for you..
not decison of mine.. It's your own choice of taste!

what i'm thinking here is..
House-Pros
-Has backyard where animals can run "free"
-It has more room and the bathrooms aren't in the "master bedroom" so its more fair that way
-Heard that the monthly rent for houses is cheaper in general
-If its rented by another person, not a company, they dont look at credit (I just turned 18, I have NO credit yet.)
-With permission, we can paint the walls.
-Less risk of getting in trouble for loud noises
-Not as many people live nearby so there'd be less unwanted surprise visits.
Apartment-Pros
-Bills are cheaper in general
-Has good "community" so I could meet more people faster
-Has pool, weight facilities, and tanning bed.

House-Cons
-have to pay ALL bills (gas, water, electricity, phone, cable, trash, etc)

Apartment-Cons
-Have to be careful with noise level
-A lot of people coming in and out
-Can't paint the walls
-Pet restrictions

I talked to some other people about this.... some of them are like, well you're too young for a house, i'd think its wise if you got an apartment to start off with, other people are like itd be a great way to build up credit and you have less things to worry about...

ya'lls opinions?

Austin is very expensive. Go and live in Pflugville then.

gas is very expensive. :) I'd be in austin most of the time anyway for school and work so it makes sense to live in austin and save gas money that way.. plus im not a morning person.. if i hafta get up before 7 i get MAD.

Move to NYC.

Live there for one year.

Austin will look incredibly cheap. Move back there.

Problem solved!

WOW that is..... CHEAP! i wish NY has that. here in NY (on long island) you can only find $800+ for small basement studio or $1,800+ for 2 bedrooms. in NYC, its much more than that.
so you'll be living with roommates, it shouldnt be a problem. if i were you i'd go for house if you and your roommates will be more careful on the utilities. good luck! :thumb:

be aware about the house rules.. some home owners are tricky about having you sign the lease to rent the house.. be aware and read carefully before you sign the agreement...

if i were in ur shoes.. if you are having a dog.. i would pick house...

if you have a cat i would pick apt. Keep in mind that most people who rent house have to pay all unilities bills.. and remember that The owner of the house aren't required to install fire alarm, doorbell, etc.etc for you...

Myself, used live in Austin and currently living in Denver, Colorado. I do believe ur describle about costs in Austin is cheap to me. Compare with Denver, ouch!

Plus no tax on food during shopping in State of Texas, that's big advantage (admit I still envy). Depend on which apartment or house can offer lease (some prefer 6 months only, one year, or both).

Used live in Austin around 6 years ago. I do remmy I lived in the apartment on Lamar Blvd and Rundberg Ln. Costs me and my then roomate about $500 for one bedroom. If I want a pet then have to pay deposit $300 (pet policy prefers 30 pounds or less). Beware, if move out with my pet, the apt keep $150 and give me $150 back if no damage. That apt only offer 6 month lease. Not having any one year lease. *yuck*

That's true about some House landlord don't check people's credit history. Maybe, u can ask one of ur family for being a co-signer for ya. Sometime, I feel cheap rents are often found in some area with high crime. (remmy that's my prespective).

Notice many college(ACC/UT) kids live on Riveside area, N. Lamar Blvd and Guadalupe St. during my residency in Austin at that time.

In my opinion, just living with roomates with similiar clean freak or messy, smoking or not, pet perference, privacy agreement (about sex, ofc), and be respect each other over food, furniture, and guests.

Why Not move to West Virginia, they have a lot of nice house with backyard for rent. The rent is like around 650 to 850 a month. Utilities here are very cheap and reasonable. Gas here are like 1.58, 1.59, 1.60.... :ugh:

Try to look for an alternative between a house and an apartment. There's townhouses and you can have both pros and cons offered from the apartments and houses in the townhouses. In the townhouse, there's a lot of spacious room and in the back of the townhouse, there's room for the animals to roam. Most townhouse complexes do have a fenced in backyard. Townhouse complexes are good for young families and they do have a program for first-timer renters since townhouses do have an either inclusive rent which means you only pay for phone & cable or you pay everything. Gas, electricity and the bills and the rent is good. If you take in a roommate, set up a lease with the landlord. Have it signed in "black and white", it's legit. When you and your roommate sign another agreement pertaining food and phone & cable bills, make sure you have it in "black and white" and have a witness sign it as well. [Fanatic Judge Judy fan here!!] Townhouses do allow you the luxury of painting and it's wonderful to live in townhouses because it's a lot like houses. With Deaf people, you don't have to shush them like you have to in apartments. You have a lot of parking space in townhouses and you can put your extra storage space in the basement. I'd really check into the townhouses if I were you. http://www.google.com/local?q=townh...&latlng=30230379,-97714431,30287384,-97744962 This one has a townhouse for $415/month & states it welcomes first time renters and pets are welcome. I'd really check into this one. It's the outskirts of Austin. Check the Avignon Realty, it's where I got it from. [I've got friends living in Austin, TX]

Or, if ya like the water and there's a lake nearby, live on a boat.....
