What's your favorite sign?

Think like a Vulcan!

Actually, Botts, the Vulcan handshape for "live long and prosper" was borrowed by Leonard Nimoy from an ancient Jewish handshape. This was used by the high priests as a blessing over the people. There is a medical correlation as to why this is used, but I'd hate to bore people.

Tell me.

Actually Doc, having grown up Jewish I am fascinated. I did not know that at all.

So please continue if you want.

On a slight different topic, but not off topic, my daughter called me this morning and signed "I want to buy a nurse." And I was confused . She is studying to be an RN Practitioner, so I thought maybe it had something to do with that.

And she pointed out it was on the back of her wrist, and said it is a sign for watch.

It is not in Sternberg that way, but it is in some new book on sign that she is studying.

OK, here goes. The High Priests (Kohanim) are descended from Moses' brother Aaron. In order to be a Kohan (Cohen, Katz, and all similar names), you need to be the son of a Kohan, and also be pure of mind and spirit. One of the scourges of Biblical times was leprosy. Before leprosy is evident as skin lesions, it often affects one of the nerves to the hand muscles (the ulnar nerve). Thus, someone who couldn't make the proper handshape for the blessings was likely not pure of body, and may be harboring leprosy. They therefore could not fulfill the requirements of being Kohan.

I just love how ancient rituals often have a medical explanation. Call me weird...

Weird is cool! Good lesson.

Oh, and two of my favorite signs are the signs for tortoise and for turtle.

They don't have ears, so I guess they're honorary ADers too!

The gesture for SUICIDE.

Why? I usually eye a girl that is bored...... point at them, raise eyebrow, make a bored face, then proceed to do a SUICIDE sign in a rather graphic way... with brain splattering and everything... them go limp. Usually that get them giggling.

as you can tell... I get bored a lot.

:rofl2:
