Well, for me, and I am a late deafened adult and still trying to learn ASL and will start classes in January, I get videos from the library and a website, have books, use the net with various sites that I will include at the end and I am a member of the local deaf club. I will be going to deaf socials and they already know that I am a newbie with ASL and are willing to work with me. None of them speak or read lips so I get to write a lot of notes but they don't mind. They are willing to help teach.

You might check to see if there is a Deaf Service Center or something like that. Check with your local library for any local services for the deaf community.

The websites are as follows:
• ASL • American Sign Language
ASLPro.com Home
DCMP.org :: Home

Hope this helps.

My local library had a publication of all of the services offered in the county and in that book I found the deaf service center and deaf clubs. You might also check with NAD to see if there is a local in your area. I found Florida's and on their website got the info for the one here in town.

Yeah. I agree with you. It's just where do i find out about Deaf events or deaf social clubs?? I tried looking online but I must not be the best at research! HAHA!

Research's always a pain in the butt.

I haven't done much research but I've found the state I'm in currently, has a website for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing.

I haven't looked into it too much. More like glanced it over and bookmarked it for later viewing...

But seriously though, I need to do more research. Any recommendations besides Google and trying the local schools/libraries?

Want really fast way to become fluent in ASL? I have simple answer for you, yes it is so amazed that it is so simple that we would have thought of years ago.....

Step 1. Buy a book called "ASL for Dummies"

Step 2 read the whole book

Step 3 forget socialize with Deaf

Step 4 your instant ASL fluent! Congrats your now certified.

If you want honest way, and go though from stratch, be persist ignore all 4 steps above, you will be expert before you know it, even long before you actually certificated.

So, that is two road splitting for you... ahhh this is America, go whichever you want to go.

Hey!! I have that book. It doesn't really help!!! Seriously I learned a little, but nothing replaces the immersion with others. You are so right on that!!

I think that you want to just learn to sign fast so that you have fun signing with anyone (hearing) beside going to the Deaf event to communicate. It is like the same way when someone want to learn French or Spanish that they studied in high school and not be able to participlate in the French or Spanish social event or club. That someone will not be able to find someone or more to communicate whether French or Spanish and you will become rusty or forgetful. That is why you need to go to Deaf Social event.

Anyway, you just have to go with the flow to learn to sign in the ASL class and be part of the Deaf social event. If you are learning only from online ASL or trying to study from a book, that is not the way to go. ASL class is much better than doing it yourself. :cool2:

How does one learn how to swim? By sitting on the sofa reading "Swimming for Dummies"? No sir. You gotta get in there and splash around. :)

3 years later, I'm still splashing.
