Whats so wrong with CI????

In all honesty, there's nothing wrong with Choclear Implants... I just feel that my tax money could go to more important things rather than a technology that works only 30% of the time. If one wants the implant - fine - pay for it yourself!

The real question is... Why do you really want it? What's wrong with being deaf? Why abolish your true identidy just because you're ashamed of who you are... just because you want to 'fit in'.. The sad truth is, with the implant... you won't fit in either.

Actually, I think in the USA... cochlear implants are mostly funded by private investors and insurance companies, not the government.

This also applies in some ways in the Canadian Healthcare too, because many elective procedures are not funded by the government. They are paid for by the insurance.

By the way, welcome to the forum! *wink*

Who pays for the Canadian Healthcare? Us taxpayers do.. so therefore it is our money that they're wasting.

The problem is, we live in a socialist country. It's nice that we have a lot of diversity, but the taxpayers' money are being spent pretty badly.

Recently, the judges at the Supreme Court of Canada requested a raise of 17% or something like that. But the thing they don't want you to know is that the 17% is actually a raise of $38,000 dollars which would bring their salaries at around 250,000 dollars each judge.

Don't you think that's a bit too much?

This is only the top of the iceberg, there are a lot of people in public sectors getting outrageous raises including our police chief in the Niagara region. He just got a raise of $75,000 bringing the total salary at $214,000 per year!

Crazy, isn't it?

Oooooooo now I want to become a police cheif.... those dirty motherfuckers!

What do you mean "Being Deaf isn´t a blessing"?

I check all the posts... None of us are against CI...
I also find nothing wrong with having CI but I beleive it´s child´s choice because it´s his/her body, not mine.
I´m total disagree to implant on the babies & toddler because they didn´t ask for it... They would lost their respect on me for this because they
will know that I´m not accept what they are, that´s why I rather to wait until my child is 7 years old, then..........
I respect your choice but you should do the same with my choice, too....

Thank you...
Have a nice day....

I am definitely not against CI and I don't let some negative opinions affect my thoughts about it. It's a very personal choice for the person wanting the implant for himself or herself, and nobody should be rejected for it.

It just sucks when both sides - anti CI and pro CI judge each other to be lousy parents or people with evil intents. I take no part in either side, because it's very ridiculous to me. If they both partake in such squabbles, then they deserve each other. :ugh2:

Loomis it sounds like you a wonderful parent who is doing what you think is best for your son. I am sure your desicion to have him implanted wasn't an easy one yet you went ahead with it because you feel it was the best thing for him.

look at me, I got CI later in my teens and hated it since cuz I was not used to it when I grew up. I wish I got it younger than older so I will be used to it.

CI don't make you hearing and you always will turn it off then you will be deaf!

CI is just new techology of hearing aid. I remember one deaf senior citizen told me that when hearing aids first come out, many deafies protest then now today, it is accepted.. now CI is new to us.

C.I. don't make me embarrassed of my deafness, and I think deafness is a blessing to me cuz it created who I am today. If I am hearing, I would be different person than I am.. no deaf cuture and etc.. C.I. don't remove deaf culture for me cuz Deaf community is always there I have C.I. or not either.

I agree. I have a CI too...got it twice, in fact. But I'm keeping my mouth shut on this one because I think I've already said everything I need to say about CI's. :)

no to replace her clarion w/positioner that was removed from the market with a Nucleus 24 device in same ear.

I have listened long and hard to the discussions claiming that people would not give children a C.I. implant until they are seven.

I have difficulty understanding this!! Have you ever dealt with a seven year old????

They don't know whats best for them and they rely on their parents for everything from meals to clothes to go to school, to be protected and helped if they are ill and you wish to put them in a position to make a decision about an operation that could change their lives???? These children at this age have complete and utter trust in their parents.

As a parent you make these decisions for your children every single day!!!!!

Some decisions are much harder than others and require more research, but do not require excuses "like we will wait till they are seven so they can make there own decision"!!!

As with all disabilities, hearing, blindness, physical, it is best for early intervention on children to obtain the best results. The later it is left the harder it is for the child. This is a fact! The hardest thing it seems, is to accept that deafness, blindness, physical disabilty are all the same as in all are disabilities and all need everyones support, especially the parents to provide a full and happy life. Don't get me wrong I know plenty of deaf people who are happy in themselves but don't we all want to do what is best for our children for the future.

You would not wait until the child was seven if you could fix blindness or a cleft palate (which is cosmetic surgery) or provide leg braces like my nephew to help him walk straight and tall.

The decision on whether a child has an operation for cosmetic purposes or for C.I. is always, at the end of the day the parents decision up until the child is old enough to book in without parental consent. Seven years of age means nothing and the child would be influenced by the parents beliefs anyway!!!!

ideafspy, bilateral implantation is still relatively rare...and actually lots of implantees still wear a hearing aid in their unimplanted ear. However there was an article in Volta Voices on pediatic bilateral implants.

Yes, Early intervention is key but on the other hand, early intervention isn't going to make the kid function like a hearing/seeing/nondisabled person. It just might give them additional skills. There are sucess stories out there, yes but there are still many kids who fall through the cracks or who still need disability aids (like walkers, speechreading, sign, wheelchairs, crutches and so on)
BTW, there's no way to "fix" blindness. Blindness has never been cured.
Cleft palate is not cosmetic sugery. Cleft palate affects speech and eating!
As for braces.....braces don't cure a foot/ leg malformation. All it does is give support to prevent really bad leg/foot malformations!

I have a story to share with you. It happened in 1987

I have a friend name is Jean. She became deaf when she was 6 yrs old. She was totally profound deaf. Her hearing aid didn't help her much. When she was 16 yrs old, her parents found the information abt CI. They gave it to Jean and told her it was her decision. Jean looked up the information and was thinking about it. BUT remember she had alot of deaf friends included myself. One day, she decided to have CI at age 16 without her parents forced her. One night, she went to teen club. Everyone at the club, found out and was mad at her for her to become a hearing person. I ignored them. I grew up in both world and I know how she felt for not hearing anything when her hearing aid didnt help. So, she lost alot of deaf friends. I didn't left her side, stayed with her and still friends ever since. She was the first girl on Long Island have CI.

Years later, her "friends" realized what they had done and made a mistake. Half of them have CI or their kids have CI. They are idiots. They just jumped conclusion that Jean is a "hearing" person. She isn't. Jean knew she is deaf. She know ASL, have few deaf friends, not like in the past she had. She is so grateful that I am still her friend.

You know some people don't understand why adult want to have CI. It's their life and they want it.. go for it. I support them. As for the children, I forbid to have them to have CI. If I have children who are deaf. I won't have them to have CI till they get older and want to have one.. I'll let them have it. It's THEIR decision.

When I was working as a substitute teacher assistant for mainstream students. I was sending to school but they were on the field trips, so they sent me to another school. Turn out the Pre-K students have CI, all of them. It turn me off and felt so digusted but was very patient till 3pm to get out of there. I saw one boy have the scar on his head and I looked at the teacher. The teacher told me that they had to repaired it and now it fixed.. I smiled and nodded then turn around and felt so sick but act cool. I never went back there to work with the Pre-K CI students again.

I think I have enough information for now.

We have Something In Common Sweetie...I totally Agree with you everything U stated right there... I feel the same way about Small Children and babies having CI.. It just something How I feel.. but Some of them Feel Differently the way I feel...I just do not think it's Right cuz they are Small of Course and They just need to be a child not having to go through alot of programs like including appropriate specialists, such as a school psychologist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, medical specialist, educational diagnostician, classroom teacher, and others.. that is a lot of work for a Child that Young.. It Is Just my Opinion..I do not care if they get one as an Adult cuz that it their Life not mine...But, I do understand and respect other points of View that People feel oppsited the way I feel.

i do see some people have CI that fine i ma not again of them but.. one thing i don't understand when i see someone have ci why they still hang out with deaf people ??

If one of your friend has cochlear implant. Are you just going reject that person who is your good or the true friend? Same idea.. if the hearing people see the person start wear the glasses and reject them or why do the person wear the glasses and still hanging the same people.
