I have a story to share with you. It happened in 1987
I have a friend name is Jean. She became deaf when she was 6 yrs old. She was totally profound deaf. Her hearing aid didn't help her much. When she was 16 yrs old, her parents found the information abt CI. They gave it to Jean and told her it was her decision. Jean looked up the information and was thinking about it. BUT remember she had alot of deaf friends included myself. One day, she decided to have CI at age 16 without her parents forced her. One night, she went to teen club. Everyone at the club, found out and was mad at her for her to become a hearing person. I ignored them. I grew up in both world and I know how she felt for not hearing anything when her hearing aid didnt help. So, she lost alot of deaf friends. I didn't left her side, stayed with her and still friends ever since. She was the first girl on Long Island have CI.
Years later, her "friends" realized what they had done and made a mistake. Half of them have CI or their kids have CI. They are idiots. They just jumped conclusion that Jean is a "hearing" person. She isn't. Jean knew she is deaf. She know ASL, have few deaf friends, not like in the past she had. She is so grateful that I am still her friend.
You know some people don't understand why adult want to have CI. It's their life and they want it.. go for it. I support them. As for the children, I forbid to have them to have CI. If I have children who are deaf. I won't have them to have CI till they get older and want to have one.. I'll let them have it. It's THEIR decision.
When I was working as a substitute teacher assistant for mainstream students. I was sending to school but they were on the field trips, so they sent me to another school. Turn out the Pre-K students have CI, all of them. It turn me off and felt so digusted but was very patient till 3pm to get out of there. I saw one boy have the scar on his head and I looked at the teacher. The teacher told me that they had to repaired it and now it fixed.. I smiled and nodded then turn around and felt so sick but act cool. I never went back there to work with the Pre-K CI students again.
I think I have enough information for now.
