What would YOU do?

That is awesome! I must confess, I've been giving this some thought as well. If only I didn't hate needles and the sight of blood... **shudders**

LOL...I take it you don't have any children yet, Liza? I was scared...no, that's not even the right word...I was completely PETRIFIED of needles - but then I had my son...LOL. You have to go for some routine bloodwork when you are pregnant...

Even now, I don't like my arm touched with needles...they can take it from the back of my hand, though. :)

Are you a candidate for the implant?

Malfoyish

but I thought once one has a CI and later has it removed, one could not go back to the hearing aid cos of the loss of hair cells.....if that's still true, then discussing the pros and cons of a CI vs a hearing aid is a bit moot, don't you think?
Yes, I know about that. I meant that maybe she could start wearing an aid again in her unimplanted ear. Many implant centers discourage use of an aid after implantation.
I recently went to Heather Whitestone McCallum's site and she said that she could hear stuff in her aided ear that she couldn't with the implant and vice versa. Maybe the same is true for you, Malfoy.
Actually Malfoy, if you could hear stuff with the implant that you couldn't without the aids....then YES, I would go for the reimplantation. Why not? You have nothing to lose!
Boult, on another site she said that her husband and family were pressuring her into the implants and that she was one of those ambigious canidates.

Well,

I don't believe anyone should be knowledgeable about CI to post in ANY CI threads!...and I may not be soo ' Brilliant ' when it comes talking about CI...

EveryOne is allow to post and voice their opinion even giving ADVICE to those who may need it....Please don't stop people from coming in here and sharing their thoughts on this!...

Thank you!... ;)

Hi Malfoyish --

I think it would be a good idea, imo, to have the Advanced Bionics replaced w/ the Nucleus. Nucleus seems more successful, and it is manufactured in the US. Also I have heard many reports claiming that AB implantees have had higher risk for meningitis (and I read that you had that recently? due to the positioner).

I have the Nucleus 24, actually... and I also have the 3M Single Channel... I can't really speak much for the Nucleus24 right now because it is still less than one year old, and I'm still re-learning how to 'hear' with it. But I love it in combination w/ my old implant in my other ear.

Good luck, and I'm sure your decision will be the right one!

Hugs

Well said, ^Angel^! I want everyone's thoughts on this - because you know, this isn't an easy decision for me and I want to get feedback from just about anyone who will offer me some - so whether you know anything about CI's or not, it really doesn't matter to me.

Hugs to Angel...

Thank you, KJ - I didn't know you had an implant! But I think I'm going to go with the Nucleus after all. I just don't have anything to lose anymore. It's depressing, but at least I'll have somewhat of a solution, and I'll know I can still benefit from an implant.

Malfoyish,

It is all up to you.. I have no problem with my CII, I am still learning I don't give a hoot what anybody say how long it takes each person to learn the sounds etc. I am taking my time, No rush. etc. According to my mom that I have improved lot..

When my son born on jan 13. since then I was amazing how much **little things** that I didn't hear when babies makes noise (yes I do hear cooing and cries etc but I mean vocalizing his voice so much in a soft spoken sound and amazing how he does that) Hehe..

Anyway Malfoyish, Go for it when you feel right in your guts and heart!

For me, if I had choice on 2nd time I would prefer AB CII again...

Yup, it's the little things that I wanted to hear. I didn't want to miss a single thing, not one teensy weensy bit.

But thank you, Wendy, for your thoughts on this...it does make deciding a little bit easier when you have other people's experiences to consider.

In both ears? I didn't think that was done...is it more beneficial than just having one?

Malfoyish

Yes, it is being done now anywhere.. FDA approved that. Research and clinical trial started 2 yrs ago or so.

Yup I was choose one of 5 people for study in boston mass for having 2nd ear implant but when the time got closer and I quit smokes (now 2 years not smoking) I just had a bad panic/anixety attacks! so I though a lots of things and decide to wait a little bit longer for both ears because I want to make sure my cochlea are still in good shape to be remove and put back in. Now they do better so I still am waiting for technology to get better with replacement on same ears instead of "using the unimplanted ear and leave behind the implanted ear" you know :)
