What words are common use now that were not used 20 years ago?

Yes, that's exactly...

I remember about mouses with balls... SUCKER!!!!! :giggle: I'm glad to own laser mouse...

Yup, mouse balls did scratch on wood and should use mouse pad but with laser mouse, mouse pad isn't needed except for desk with glass surface.

The terms "owned" and "sick".

(beaten at a video game) "ooooh, you just got owned, man!!!"

(admiring a nice car) "those rims are sick."

I was going to say "sick". Also, "fresh" ("Don't I look fresh today", meaning cool) Also my kids say "f---ing A" (I guess it means "awesome"). I also hear "Oh snap" a lot.
Also, the verb Tivo. "I Tivo'ed that last night"

"fresh" was actually an expression we used as teenagers back in the 80s. (as evidenced by the song "fresh" by kool and the gang)

what does "oh snap!" mean? is snap used to replace the word sh*t?

it's for "ZING" purpose. if somebody got zinged, the bystander usually exclaims - "ooooooo snappppppppp!"

what about "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" or "BOOM GOES THE HEADSHOT!" also.... "all your bases are belong to me."

jiro,

i've never heard of the expressions, "boom! headshot!" or "boom goes the headshot!" i always thought those were phrases you invented yourself. :giggle:

what about obnoxious word - "like" ? I don't know if people 20 years ago frequently use "like" in the convo.

"you know like.... you know... like... he said like....."

it's the phrase shouted by online overzealous first-person shooter when killing other gamer (in game of course) by headshot - usually with sniper rifle. the head exploded in the game. BOOM! HEADSHOT! I think the phrase was invented from Counter Strike game.

Hear Again - below is a youtube clip for you to listen to overly-excited, obsessed gamer who seems to be out of reality. (of course this video is staged but it's freakin' hilarious)

I believe they did because back then in the 70's, People did use that expression.

Maybe that was the case because I was watching too much of these Scooby Doo Cartoon where Shaggy always says "Like...." etc, etc. :P

i was a child back in the 70s and i remember hearing people say the word "like" in the way you describe, jolie.

that being said, i think the expression became more popularized in the 80s when people started talking like valley girls.

jiro,

would you mind giving me the direct URL to the youtube video? for whatever reason, i can't play youtube videos directly from ad.

I don't remember when it came into widespread use but I'm pretty sure it was before 1989. I think it started with the beatniks, which would be the 1950s. It seems to fit the lexicon of Maynard G. Krebs. :P
