This may not be the most absurd question anyone would ask a deafie or anyone, but someone asked me one regarding my Cochlear Implant.

She asked, "is that thing attached to your brain?" when she asked me only out of curiousity, I felt like laughing like a maniac but I managed to stifle it.

I said no it's not. It's attached to your scalp but not inherently. It requires a surgery for a magnet to be placed under your scalp and that's how your Cochlear Implant is "attached" to your "brain".

Please share your story :D

The only thing I can think of, and only because I get it so often...when people learn I wear hearing aids and just how much hearing loss I have they respond, "so those things give you normal hearing?" Um....no, not quite....you'd think this would be obvious.

Interesting, I've never gotten that..

I wouldn't say it is the stupidest, but, in my case, this does have to do with being deaf, people often say, "I'd rather be deaf than blind". Now, I know they mean well so it really doesn't bother me at all, but it does give you pause. I usually respond with, "I'd rather be neither".

My girlfriend's Mom has a Maltese. One time, we were out walking the Maltese. Someone asked her how come she has a cat on leash? I hope that those of you who walks small dogs do not get insulted like this.

I've got the look of disbelief many times as to why I'm not married.....

Mine wasn't a question it was more or less a statement of horror "you're allowed to drive?!"
erm, yes...

" Is your husband Deaf too?". This one REALLY makes me angry as if because I am Deaf my husband must be defective too for us to be together. It's how it comes across. When I've told the person asking such a stupid question that no, he's not Deaf they seem surprised.

Gee-if I had one arm, would you ask me if my husband had one arm too? I think not.

I had my tubes tied because I did not want to risk complications from an autoimmune disease I have-I've been diagnosed with Sjorgrens syndrome recently but it's secondary. Doctor thinks it could be Lupus but has thought so for about 4 years now but blood work isn't showing up just yet. We were lucky to catch the positive blood work for Sjorgrens. I also got them tied because I also do not want kids and do not have any currently thankfully. :) I used the medical excuse to get them tied and it worked! yay!

However, when people ask me if I have kids or want them and I say no...it goes on from there to the point where I tell them I had my tubes tied, NO I do not want kids.
Then they say " OH! I get it! it's because you're Deaf right?".

NO. I simply do NOT want kids. Being Deaf is not WHY I got my tubes tied. I just gave you TWO reasons 1) I do not want kids 2) an autoimmune disease but the main reason is of course number 1 I just used the autoimmune crap to convince the doctor to tie my tubes at the age of 28.

:rolls eyes:

this for ever happening, you loose something or put it down somewhere and they say do you remember where you were or where you put it....oh for gods sake would not be lost if could remember where i put it

But caz12! Don't you know "it's always in the last place you look?"

^ THAT is my stupidest one. Of course it's in the last place I look! Why would I keep looking for it once I've found it?

My sister has this disease...so I really feel for you!

(I work in a camping store and a customer comes up to me)

"Do you sell cattle brands?"

"I'm sorry, what brand was that?"

"You know, what you brand cows with..."

"Uh, noooo... We are a camping store. You probably have to contact a feed store or contact a welder about how that process works. Sorry."

I don't know WTF she came to us for a cattle brand.

Here's another one... I come out to them as being trans. They often ask, "Well if you like women, why did you become a woman?"

Hmmm, oh my gosh, I'm starting to forget... What does a lesbian mean...? Wait a minute, lesbian's not a word is it? Hmmm, apparently, lesbian is a word that I created, as it's not anywhere online in a dictionary. Does anybody know what a lesbian is?

Twilight zone music ensues...

Seriously, I have to explain that who you ARE and who you LOVE are two different things.

It's not a question but a comment by bone head hearies. When a fellow hearie say Deaf and Dumb: it just eats me up inside!! I just want to stangle them until their heads fall off their shoulders. I always tell those who say that junk that Deaf people are a trillion times smarter than he/she can ever be!

Then I give then a thourough education on why their stupid comment is downright WRONG.

Which one Sjorgrens or Lupus? I was shocked when the blood work came back positive for Sjorgrens-it came back positive after I had a massive flare. It was horrible. I was pretty much "not there". Couldn't drive I was very spaced out, my joints were killing me, I was very very tired and I was like a zombie. I had to get rid of my manual transmission car for an automatic because I was having problems pushing down the clutch when I had a flare of the joint pain. Was in remission but apparently I'm out now.

I hope Sjorgrens isn't as bad or worse than Lupus. I know next to nothing about it but do have most of the severe symptoms, the nerve pain, confusion (mental) joint pain. As for Lupus? I do not have any blood markers for it thankfully. I hope I never do.
