What to do when BSOD flashes on W8 netbook?

@ whatdidyousay! , it all sucks, in my opinion it sucks slightly less then 8, though I barely know what changed.

For people with W8, W8.1 is at least a little improvement. Personally, I'll stick with W7 for as long as possible.

Reba,

some time ago, I had a friend who was facing a very similar situation as your friend, and it took me a while to figure out how to get it operational again, but what I did was take out the battery, wait 30 seconds, put it back in, and tried the restore, and it worked. If you're able to do that, maybe try it? Just a thought.
I was going to try that but I read on a tech forum that someone tried that and it did not work. I might try it anyway. I'm getting desperate but I can't spend too much more time on this project.

Same here, I use Windows 7 due most reliable OS that MS support.

Latest attempt, got this pop-up box message:

"Re-image Your Computer--Windows cannot find a system image on this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final DVD from a backup set and disk, click Retry."

The problem is, I don't have a W8 backup disk of any kind.

The problem with these newer computers is they no longer come with back-up disks. Supposedly the restore drive (oftentimes D:/ on most computers that use C:/ as a primary drive) retains everything you need for back-ups. But I've heard that's not always successful. Sorry this is no help but I feel for you. I guess I would suggest calling the OEM and give the serial # for the netbook and see if they can't mail you a back-up disk or some other resolution.

Mmmmm... this sound like that there's a image file in another partition and somehow when update to 8.1 wiped out the image file? Like doing a fresh installation?

You could get free W8 from your school - check IT department. :hmm:

Not sure what it is like in Windows 8 but in windows 7

Right click on COMPUTER icon on desktop
Select PROPERTIES

It should show what type it is on the screen that comes up- under SYSTEM-->System Type.

Ahh.. google helped :)

1. Open Windows 8 Control Panel
2. Touch or click on System and Security
3. With the System and Security window now open, click or touch System
4. With the System applet now open, titled View basic information about your computer, find the System area, located under the large Windows 8 logo. It will say either 32 bit or 64 bit there.

another good info-
How to Determine What Version of Windows You Have Installed

Thank you , but I will wait until my daughter is here , she is better at this stuff.

I just finished using the command prompt with administrator priveleges to attempt to make a system image. Well, that didn't work:

"The recovery image cannot be written."

I tried every possible drive, btw. Nothing.

I noticed on the Asus website that they will sell the customer a backup but it's not free.

It's not my computer. Our school still uses W7, so I'm not sure they have W8 available to share.

I'll check my on-line student resource.

I'm struggling to get the case open. This one doesn't have a separate battery compartment. I've removed the screws, and loosened up three sides but I can't get the last side loose. It's the side where the laptop cover hinge is located.

I checked, and Dreamspark offers W8.1 as an online download for free to registered students. I might try that.

Part of the problem is that the computer owner can't give me enough background info. He's not sure or doesn't remember a lot of what he did, and didn't keep any notes or documentation.

I've been trying to restore the system, multiple attempts, multiple ways (including Safe Mode). It won't restore.

I've got to make a restore disk (actually thumb drive because netbooks don't have disk drives).

Netbook never had and never will use optical disc. (disk drive is hard drive, not disc)

Update:

I went to ASUS Live Chat support today. The technician could not resolve the problem but did find out the netbook was still under warranty, and that I could send it to them to be repaired. So, that's my next step.

Sounds good. And since it is not working this way a bit more delay from sending it in doesn't make as much difference.
