I'm trying to help my friend with his computer but this has me stuck.

He has a ASUS F200CA-SH01T netbook. It came with Windows 8 installed, and he told me that he upgraded it to Windows 8.1. He has no recovery disks, and I can't find a Product Key.

After logging on, I can briefly get the desktop screen, and then it starts flashing the BSOD.

He doesn't have anything irreplaceable on the computer, so he's fine with a full restore. I can get the restore/repair menu OK. However, I can't do the restore. When I get to that point, I get an error message that the partition is either missing or locked.

I've been searching the web forums and Google for any suggestions how to fix this. None of the suggestions have worked.

Any ideas or experiences?

Is Window 8.1 better than Window 8 ? I have Window 8 and been thinking upgrading it to Window 8.1 I wish you could help with my computer too.

Windows 8.1 is supposed to fix some of the flaws of Windows 8.

I don't get a blue screen with any error/stop messages or codes. Everything loads fine thru the log-in and the charms menu. Then, I click/tap on the "Desktop" charm, and it opens to that screen. Looks good for a few seconds, then the desktop flips into a blue screen, then back and forth between blue and desktop.

:ty:

I'm checking those suggestions. So far, not good. :(

I recommended to reformat and re-install OS, also don't install all drivers at same time so need divide and try to determine whichever driver cause BSOD. If you spot one driver that cause BSOD so need find different driver or replace the hardware.

Yes, you can use Windows Update to updating from 8.0 to 8.1.

I have 8.1 on my MBP and running much better than 8.0.

Tell me, when you updated from 8 to 8.1, did you have to enter the product key?

No, in some cases, you may have to re-activate Windows.

If you enter valid product key in 8.0 so it should be activated properly after update to 8.1.

Reba,

some time ago, I had a friend who was facing a very similar situation as your friend, and it took me a while to figure out how to get it operational again, but what I did was take out the battery, wait 30 seconds, put it back in, and tried the restore, and it worked. If you're able to do that, maybe try it? Just a thought.

I am not sure what version I have , how you do find that out ?
Not sure what it is like in Windows 8 but in windows 7

Right click on COMPUTER icon on desktop
Select PROPERTIES

It should show what type it is on the screen that comes up- under SYSTEM-->System Type.

Ahh.. google helped :)

1. Open Windows 8 Control Panel
2. Touch or click on System and Security
3. With the System and Security window now open, click or touch System
4. With the System applet now open, titled View basic information about your computer, find the System area, located under the large Windows 8 logo. It will say either 32 bit or 64 bit there.

another good info-
How to Determine What Version of Windows You Have Installed

That would tell me the upgrade is corrupted, did he interrupt the system while upgrading? I would either restore it to its earliest point or a total reinstall altogether. Don't opt for a complete erase, the main OS needed to install may be on a separate drive.

@ whatdidyousay! , it all sucks, in my opinion it sucks slightly less then 8, though I barely know what changed.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using AllDeaf App mobile app

Part of the problem is that the computer owner can't give me enough background info. He's not sure or doesn't remember a lot of what he did, and didn't keep any notes or documentation.

I've been trying to restore the system, multiple attempts, multiple ways (including Safe Mode). It won't restore.

I've got to make a restore disk (actually thumb drive because netbooks don't have disk drives).
