What the Deaf Man Heard

Have any of you seen that movie? It's a great movie! Here's a short summary of the movie:
In 1945, a young boy arrives in a small Georgia town on a bus from which his Mother was abducted and murdered. Alone he sits quietly and everyone becomes convinced that he was deaf and mute. Deciding that silence offered some power and protection, the boy decides to remain mute and just listens to all that is being said around him by people who thinks that he cannot hear.
Sounds interesting, eh?

i watch that movie and it was good -- i remmy that with my mom and at end of movie... ppl gulped!

yea ive seen that movie too and it was indeed VERY good! and yea MizzDeaf u right LOL at the end the townspeople pretty much gulped

Matthew Modine did a wonderful job acting as a Deaf person. Normally, the Deaf Community would raise a brouhaha about a hearing actor portraying a Deaf person but Matthew Modine did a wonderful job and he wasn't a poser. He just didn't use his voice, per se, in the movie and did a lot of "hands on" jobs such as doing odd jobs when the townspeople dropped off odd jobs for him to do in the "Job bin". However if you recall Rob Lowe, he did portray a Deaf person and the Deaf Community did raise a brouhaha about his portrayal. It was because the derogatory word "Deaf-mute" was repeatedly said throughout in the movie in reference to Rob Lowe's character in another movie.

Yes, he pretty much just "minded his own business" without signing or anything. Imagine living your whole life without talking!?

Yes, I do remember him playing the role of a deaf person in Stephen King's The Stand.

Did you know he is deaf in one ear?

His left ear, I think.

Just like WaterRats, I saw this movie as a TV special some years ago. I thought it was a very good movie! :)
Did you know that back in 1985 (I was about 15 then), there was a TV movie called "Love is Never Silent" with Ed Waterstreet as the deaf dad? :) That's a good one too! :)

Mare Winningham portrayed his hearing daughter and I will never forget the question her father asks her in the movie. "Does the sunbeams make noises when it hits the ground?" It was so poignant for me as a young child because I knew I took the residual hearing I had for granted.

Plot Summary for
Love Is Never Silent (1985) (TV)

A young woman (Mare Winningham) struggles with her own need for independence and the obligation she feels for her hearing-impaired parents (Ed Waterstreet, Phyllis French) in this depression-era drama. A friend (Sid Caesar) sees her turmoil and tells her she must find happiness on her own. However, the initial joy she finds in marriage starts to strain under the guilt she feels for deserting her parents and the bitterness they express towards her.

Yes that correct, Rob is deaf in one of his ear... I did not chance to see his movie.

Are either on DVD by any chance? I've got What the Deaf man heard on video with subtitles, I taped it. But I'd love to have both movies, Love is never silent as well on DVD.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm trying to find a DVD version. :(

I found it on DVD! You can order it online from Amazon, Walmart, eBay, or Circuit City. The price ranges from $12 to $18... depending on where you order it from.

Ahh excellent, it's subtitled I assume?
Hmm... good question. I never really depend on those websites. A friend of mine found Hercules: Season 1 on DVD online. All the websites said that it was closed captioned. He went out and bought it... but it wasn't really closed captioned. Luckily, the store was able to let him return it. The store copy didn't say if it was closed captioned. From now on, he only depends on the in-store copy to determine if it's captioned or subtitled.

What year was this? "What the Deaf Man Heard"?? so I can search for it easily to see if I can get it on dvd or vhs...

I was wondering if anybody could make a request on any of old movie or tv movies to stations. for example, fox, abc, cbs, nbc, pax, hallmark, lifetime, spice, etc. cuz Ive been wanting to ask lifetime to put in some old movie with Marlee Matlin in it, the part where her mother has taken her daughter away from her.. the name of daughter is Amy, I think. I havent seen this in ages.
