What is wrong with some people?

:eek2: :-o I can't believe you swore, shel! I'm shocked!

LOL! I used to be polite when people would say that but they would get more rude and tell me not to be a smart ass even though I was polite about it hence the swearing at them. Luckily it doesnt happen too often..maybe a handful of times.

You'd think people knew better, but, then again, I have a hearing dog with me at almost all times, attached to a short leash on my right side. You'd be surprised what people do around us!

Shel90 I don't blame you for doing that. I see the line "What are you, deaf?" on the same level as "Are you retarded or what?" or "Lol, that's so gay." They used the word "deaf" in negatively way, as well as "retarded" or "gay". That's just from my point of view. That's why I did not like seeing that line on television or movie. I know it's just a habit of hearing people, but it seems little hurtful to me.

That's why I always try to avoid words that represent certain group in a degradable way.

Well, then, you're gonna have to figure out a way to make them shut up, huh? You can be sickeningly sweet like this: "Oh, I'm sorry. Actually I am deaf, why do you want to know? I wear two hearing aids." Or if you wear one, you know what to do. Kill them with kindness or, as a former boss of mine said, "you can attrack more friends with honey than with vinegar." All of these things I mentioned also came from him, so, go ahead and have a little fun. If they don't work, find something else that will. But, always keep your sense of humor, as you can laugh at them later when they're out of sight.:D Let them look like idiots, don't join their club.

Resident grammar and spelling corrector? :eek3:

Sometimes perfect-hearing-people hurt me so much, I just want to switch off my aids and let the whole world fuck off.

Been there? :ugh3::ugh2:

I'm to gentle natured to actually say this to anyone, but God I feel it sometimes.

I find his words rather ironic given his acid remarks on other posters' grammar spelling.

While I have seen and been in situations like you all have mentioned in this thread.. I think that more times than not I have been in situations where people are polite rather than rude.. You would be surprised how many hearing people have never been in social contact with a deaf person..

Last week I had a really interesting interaction with a hearing person at a gas station of all places..

I stopped at the pump to fuel up. Got out of the car and waved hello to the attendant inside the store to turn on the pump. I filled up and headed inside. It was my first time in that store, so I looked around to see a few of the things they had. Picked up my usual lunch (Redbull and an OJ) and went up to the counter.

(Now at this point most everyone hearing and deaf know the drill.. say hello.. give the attendent your card or cash.. wait for the reciept.. sign it.. and say thanks.. )

So that all happens, but after I signed the slip and handed it back she signed THANK YOU!.. I was a bit shocked.. I said thanks back and headed out the door.. I would have liked to have stopped and talked to her for a minute but I had to get to a meeting at the college.

I thought it was nice of her to do that.. but one thing is a bit off.. I am just wondering how she knew that I knew ASL? Anyways.. it kind of made my day..but thats just me..

Thought as much. I wonder how long it will be before he notices my grammical error? :giggle: I'm a sloppy proofreader. :P

 @ Vampy - I bet the look on the customers face was priceless at that moment. I had a similar moment when I worked at the nursing home. A coworker behind me screamed "ARE YOU DEAF?" After I asked her nicely to repeat what she said to me because I wanted to be sure I heard her correctly. I responded in a professional tone - Why yes as a matter of fact I am, why do you ask?? My charge nurse was standing there and knew before hand that I was deaf in one ear and was trying all she could to keep her composure in front of the nursing home residents. All I heard after that moment was - "well I must be working with a deaf moron anyhow...." She was later wrote up because some of the residents complained of her loud voice that sounded ugly. LOL

The rudeness of some people never ceases to amaze me. She should have immediately apologized to you for her own ignorance. Pretty good sign that that kind of behavior is more than rude, it shows a serious character flaw on behalf of the person behaving that way.

Yup, I agree that it's all in HOW you broach this issue; there's a lotta things in life that are unfair and this issue is one of them so best to develop the skill to minimize the hurtfulness some of you mentioned.

I have a recent example; I was at the checkstand the other day at Lowe's in Oregon where we are vacationing, yakking with my in-laws when the cashier said something to me and I said, "I'm sorry what was that? I forgot to mention I'm hard of hearing." She replied, jokingly, "Oh, that's alright, all men are hard-of-hearing". We all cracked up over that one! Then I craned
my neck around and pointed to my hearing aid, saying, "Well, ma'am, I assure you this isn't a radio". She said, "Ohhhhh" and we all had another laugh at that.....and away we went, with no one feeling bad.

You are a wonderfully well adjusted and tolerant person, Tousi! A sense of humor, and enough pride to handle the situation with class.

Sometimes the swear words are the only appropriate response! :giggle: Gets their attention!

My son used to have at-shirt that read, "No, I'm not deaf. I'm just ignoring you."

Ain't it ironic that the most ignorant people are the ones who don't think they are. Like you, I am constantly amazed at the rudeness of some people. Hopefully, in our lifetime, things can change. All we can do is try our best to educate those who are ignorant.

Maybe we just say it out loud, "Wow, what a rude person you are..." Or something like this. Maybe that will bring some awareness to such ignorant person.

The other night I was watching Cold Case on CBS with captions and the male and female detectives went to a guy for questioning on an old murder case. The person they were questioning took a look at the female detective and said - "Are you a lesbian?" The woman cut him a look of complete digust and replied sharply - "Are you a jackass?" I almost fell out of my seat over that one. I may use that one someone who's KNOWN to repeatedly do this to deaf/HH people. It was a really good way to point out his biggest personality flaw, :giggle:

Agreed. Just there are days that it seems like an impossible job!:giggle:
