What does this hand shape mean?

That's a hand shape, not a sign.

Nah, probably closer to a regional sign for "soon" than "two days ago". And I don't even think this is the meaning either.

The "Two days ago" sign starts and ends with the fingertips.


For the person asking; sign language includes hand shapes, positioning, AND hand movement to convey a meaning.

We only have a hand shape and position to determine what the picture may be saying.

After analyzing it a bit more, two things I noticed:

This guy likely is a Canadian. He also probably is either a hearing person, or a very new sign language learner according to his hand shape and position.

With this information - It could be with my best bet a name sign, some sign that the Canadians use that I am not aware of, or a sign for something that is well known like "two days ago" and "soon" was butchered by the novice.

It could be the start of the TWO-DAYS-AGO sign. It looks a little off. Why he's holding that sign for a photo op, I don't know.

The sign I use for SOON is the F-hand touching the chin.

Could be his name sign.

He looks like a gangsta to me.

That is the most commonly used sign for SOON. I know of around five signs for SOON though, and one of them kind of resembles the picture.

You're right, it looks a bit off. When you try to duplicate the sign, you will feel what I feel like, a newcomer.

That's what I try to do when I see a picture of a sign, or when someone describes one. I try to duplicate it.

Yes, that one felt a little awkward.

It could be a name sign, which would be why he's posing with it. :dunno:
 
Thank you for the replies. I appreciate it.

The guy in the photo is Polish by descent, but was born in America. He knows several languages, including German, Japanese & Spanish. He has a cochlear implant (I'm not sure if it's in one ear or both). He doesn't rely on ASL too much, as far as I know, because he reads lips very well. So it makes perfect sense that his signs would be awkward. I asked him a long time ago what the sign meant and never got a response.

I am very new to ASL myself and completely forgot that hand movement is an essential part of the equation. I should have realized that.
 
The OP reminds me of the day my son rode the school bus to school for the first time. He came home, flipped me the bird, and signed, "Sign mean what?":lol:
