I had to write a poem for my English class, a "persona" poem as a class project and define what it means to me. So I basically chose what was pretty much personal to me, and explain how both worlds are so different to each other, because both worlds don't normally understand each other, and people who read this poem, kind of realized what both worlds are going through. Hope you like.
What does it mean to be deaf?
To rely on somebody to speak for you,
to use your hands to communicate to others
or just using the old-fashioned pen and paper,
or have somebody to speak on the phone call for you
because you simply can't hear?
What does it mean to be deaf?
To stand up for your rights, yourself
when you're not getting what you need,
or when someone is making fun of you
just because you're different?
Having to rely on your eyes while driving,
not being able to understand the television when the subtitles aren't working?
Or...how about the difficulties with your deaf community,
not accepting you as you can talk so well,
or how you recently got a cochlear implant because they think a part of you is gone?
or how you're in a hearing mainstreaming school?
To show them that it's okay to be a part of a different world,
Learn how to be a person to experience different things,
to take a risk.
to have an adventure.
What does it mean to be deaf when you're just using:
your eyes,
your hands,
your culture,
and your beliefs?
Well... only one can understand, when you experienced it.
