What Books Have You Recently Purchased?

Just got a library card so I will use this thread as a reference to start reading different kinds of books! Yay for summer reading!

Just got done reading a book called "The Christian Atheist".

It talks about how people who believe in God but are living like God does not exists. Interesting piece, though.

ya'all must read The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. Read this probably 3x when I was a kid. My dad got it for me as a gift.

ya'all must read The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.

I love this book! This is the first of the Good Earth trilogy, I already bought the second one SONS and am gonna order last third A House Divided from Amazon someday.

It's a great, great literature,
great language, great story, great piece of history also.

Pearl S. Buck also wrote many other books about then China, a lot of them about oppressed women
and their lives in men dominated society.
You can order them cheaply from Amazon or you local Chapters or Barnes & Nobles.

Barnes*&*Noble.com - All Product Search: Pearl S Buck

I have Peony and Imperial Woman - haven't read them yet.

btw
there is an old b&w movie based on The Good Earth - not quite the same as the book but familiar, with the well known actress Luise Rainer:

worth seeing. it was shown not that long ago on old movies channel.

Fuzzy

Anybody ever read the Redwall series by Brian Jacques? They're really good books, if you can get into them.

Just bought and started reading The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat. Typically (I've read two of her previous books), I find the author's name to be the most interesting part about the books :laugh2:, but I am starting to like this one. A "dew breaker" is a torturer in a Hatian prison, and this book is about the main character, a young Hatian-American woman, learning that her father was once this terrible, torturous man. Good premise, but we'll see where Danticat takes it...

I preferred the book to the movie - which usually is the case when I read the book before watching the movie :cool2:

always. it's the best. for ie - I read Sphere and then I saw the movie. It was awful...... movie that is. Wish I never watched it. :mad2:

<--just finished Meg:Hell's Aquarium ...now I gotta get the original Steve Alten novel, Meg...

Meg is like Peter Benchley's Jaws on steroids.

So lately for my lunch time reading, I kept David Halberstam's 1986 book "The Reckoning" about the competition between Ford and Nissan on my Isuzu's front seat.

Finished The Dew Breaker. It was okay. I don't recommend it unless you're interested in Haitian studies or literary studies. Given the rich subject matter the author had to work with, it came up a bit flat and contrived to me.

Now on to Stephen Millhauser's Martin Dressler

Finished reading this book called Rampage The Social Roots of School Shootings.

Interesting insights.

okay.. recently purchased and first one - Queen of the Road! so far psychologically witty. sadly, I've only read not more than 5 or 6 books (high school books not count because I didn't actually read for reviews lol) in lifetime so any good books you recommend I might will read! :)

it will be a shock to my families and friends if I ever finish this book.

Sounds like quite an interesting book to read. I like stories with a twist :D

road twists. funny ways & wordings. :) about a couple traveling across america in their BUS, with cats, dog and 200+ pairs of shoes. :eek3: :hmm: still on only 9th page I think ...

Next up is Dance, Dance, Dance by Haruki Murakami. We'll see how it goes...

Martin Dressler was a very good book. Not good enough to win the Pulitzer (which it did), but still good.
