Westboro met its match....

All the news stories seem to be quoting the same original source, a message board at Ole Miss. Hmm..... I dunno. Seems a little too revenge-fantasy perfect.

Edited to add: here is the local newspaper: http://www.clarionledger.com/

I did a search on the paper's website and nothing came up for "westboro church." Wouldn't you think the local paper would have given this story major play, if it really did happen?

Still searching various terms, but I'm a wee bit suspicious.

Then it must be a hoax.

I saw only these:

Plans in place to minimize protest at funeral | The Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com

Pain, pride at every turn as Mississippi honors hero | The Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com

I read this earlier today. Thought it was hilarious! ;)

I think it is a hoax, actually.

Looking further in the local paper, I found this:

'Overwhelmed' by vet's funeral | The Clarion-Ledger | clarionledger.com

This is a letter to the editor by someone who came from Brooklyn, NY whose son-in-law was in the same company as Jason. The writer says:

"I wanted to be sure that his family was protected from the ugliness of those who disrupt military funerals.

"I came but wasn't needed, there was no room in Brandon for ugliness on April 16."

A little ambiguous, perhaps.

But there was nothing at all in the way of local news about any Westboro protesters, any man getting beaten, any cars blocked in by trucks in a hotel parking lot, none of that.

I'm thinking some talented Ol' Miss student(s) wrote up their dream fantasy, posted it on the bulletin board, and sat back waiting to see how many papers would pick it up. The ones who did are not exactly prime examples of objective journalism.

My call: hoax.

If you want to know what Westboro is up to (their protest schedule), you can track them at:

http://www.godhatesfags.com/schedule.html

I notice that they plan to demonstrate on Memorial Day, in DC. Should be interesting. That's also the time and place of the annual Rolling Thunder ride. :hmm:

That's why the Patriot Guard Riders have a non-confrontational policy. We're not even allowed to speak to or make eye contact with protesters.

Makes much more sense to me. You simply cannot reduce violence with violence. It simply creates justification for the use of more violence in retalliation.

You know, I find it disturbing that we need to track their schedule in an attempt to minimize their evil.

The PGR philosophy is that funerals for our fallen should be dignified, stress free, and respectful for the families. Causing scenes is not dignified, stress free, nor respectful. The goal of the PGR is to protect the families.

Thank you for being there for the families. Quite a shame that they need be protected from groups like Westboro.

You don't want to look at it.
The gist is that a guy was beaten senseless and no townspeople saw anything, trucks blocked vehicles with Kansas plates in parking lots, people were brought in for hours of questioning about "crimes they might have possibly been involved in" only to be released after the services, etc. etc. Hooliganism meets hooliganism.

While I would have preferred that no one got beat senseless, I do think they did a good job of countering the Westboro church.

No one actually got beaten up, far as can be determined. The whole thing appears to be a hoax that was written up and posted on an Ole Miss bulletin board. Revenge-fantasy fanfic gone viral, essentially.

The funeral actually happened of course, and the townspeople did line the roads from the airport into town to honor the Marine's coffin passing, and apparently the Westboro church had made some threatening noises to come, but in the end, none of the Westboro-related stuff actually happened. There are no legitmate reports of it other than copies of the bulletin-board thing.

:hmm: I guess I should have googled this before posting.

one of the best counter-reply I have read. Thank you Reba.
