What color HA did you get? I was 8 yo when I got my first HA and I was really shocked at how loud a paper bag was and I did not know what rain sound like when it fell on my unbrella. It is a trip hearing new sounds or hearing them again.

Thank you! Im just really glad that I'm doing okay with them. I just have to get used to it sounding like I'm talking through a slinky. :shock:

As a hearing person, I have to say that I think we learn to ignore or block out a lot of those sounds (maybe that is why it seems like the little noises aren't so loud to us- or maybe it is just that the hearing aids are amplifying everything, not sure). Although I have to say, personally, I have pretty sensitive hearing- I am constantly hearing things that other hearing people don't hear (ha, that's a lot of hearing going on in that sentence!:laugh2:). I hear fluorescent lights humming sometimes and other weird things like that and when I ask other people "do you hear that noise?" most of them say they don't. But I do think there are some sounds that I have learned to block out just because I hear them so often- I think that's what hearing people do probably, otherwise we would get distracted a lot by all the sounds going on around us. Maybe sounds are more noticeable to those with HA's too because they don't always hear sound at the level they hear when wearing aids- so when you put your aids on it takes a while for your brain to adjust and filter out what sounds to pay attention to and what sounds are just "background noise"... (Hope that makes sense.)
 
In a Cloud- I also wanted to say congrats on your new aids. I am glad you are enjoying them and that they are helping you out. I am also enjoying hearing everyone's stories about getting their hearing aids and all the things you discovered you could hear. I can't wait to see my daughter's reaction when she finally gets her hearing aids (hopefully it will be in April- they took mold impressions two weeks ago)!
 
I use to be hearing and now completely deaf. Sounds are definietly amplified with my CI. When someone takes a shower upstairs the water noise is so, so loud. Same as all the appliances.

I really like what Ambrosia said about the noises being so loud but not voices. That is hard to explain to people. Last night I went to a two hour baptism class at church, heard very little what the priest said but those church bells going off every 15 minutes stayed with me all night!!!

This makes me think that different people are using the same terms to mean different things.

Are you saying that you did not hear any sound from the priest or are you saying that you did not understand anything that was said? Often I (with a hearing aid) know that someone is talking but do not understand the words.

If I fall asleep wearing my HA my snoring can wake me up, it has a few times. So I know snore when I sleep.

I almost fell asleep with mine on earlier. But it started to tickle my ear and when I went to rub it, I remembered I had HAs.

That may be part of it, but as someone who used to be hearing, and started to lose it and got hearing aids, it makes noised like paper bags crackling, change clanging together, stuff like that louder than it would normally occur. Just trust me lol. It was worse with analog hearing aids though, the digitals dampen sounds.

When I first got mine I was panicked about forgetting to take them off before I got in the shower, I was forever running my finger behind my ear to check before I got in. I did jump into a pool once with my digital on :shock:

LOL.. funny thing is that you can hear the ABS in some cars when they brake especially when they're taking a corner.

But we genearlly adjust to the sounds ourselves to where they're not as loud to us just like the hearing.

Have you looked into using an assistive listening device (t-coil, fm, etc) to use at church, etc? I use an FM system at church (sooo glad they installed that) and it makes the priests, lectors, etc sound like they're right next to me and I sit in the back of the church.

I recently got a bluetooth mic (RemoteMic) from Phonak to use with my ComPilot. Haven't used it much for one-on-one, but expect it to be as good as the FM when I do need it. I acutally used it in a church w/o an FM system and it helped by picking up the sounds from the speakers. Probably because when I'm in the "mode" with my hearing aids, other sounds are either turned off or set on very low volume.

True, and the brake pedal vibration can be startling at times.

There is one thing that people should know about HA's and CI's: Even if you are bilateral, it is still very difficult to pinpoint where sounds are originating. You can move your head around to see if it is louder or quieter, but that is pretty much all I can do.

I have a bad tire on my Honda, and the sound of it grinding is irritating, cannot isolate which one it is, since all four are too close to each other.

I've asked 3 hearing people to help me isolate, and all of them say it is hard, but it is a little louder on the right side, which narrows it down to 2. After a few months, I've given up and will get 4 new tires soon.

Very true. Even CI's make those things louder than they should be. Good thing my brain has learned to ignore those sounds over time, but, when the moment is right (such as trying to walk across a room without waking someone up), everything suddenly becomes louder....which is probably true for hearing people as well.
