A local man told reporters he intends to sue Walgreen’s drug stores for firing him for having too many tattoos.

Nathan Hardisty claims he was fired from the Walgreen’s at Hoxie Four Corners in Warwick because he reportedly has too much body art for customers.

On Saturday, about a dozen people gathered outside the store to protest his firing.

The 26-year-old Warwick man says he was hired with his tattoos showing; got great performance reviews; and was even promoted to shift manager with no problem.

He says the store fired him after one customer complained about his tattoos several weeks ago. He told one reporter he was told to cover his tattoos with his clothing and that they would supply him with makeup to conceal any tattoos as an alternative to removing the tattoos all together. He said he was fired when he refused to adopt either solution.

Walgreen’s won't comment on the firing and said it was company policy to not provide information about why any of their employees have been fired.

Hardisty told a reporter Saturday that he has been speaking with a local lawyer about his case and said he had contacted the ACLU of Rhode Island about his case but offered no further details about a suit against Walgreen’s. Steve Brown of the ACLU was out of town and unavailable for comment. The law firm he said was considering his case had not returned a phone inquiry about the matter as of press time.

Correct me if I'm wrong...as I saw something on TV about a story similar to this....having tatts below the elbow is a "no-no" for securing a good or a "white-collar" job with employers....possibily even when working with/around people....

Some people do go "overboard" with tatts...even becoming addicted to them....Walgreens is a pharmacy and surely caters to the Baby Boomer generation....and the one that I frequent here in Jax...is very "customer-oriented"....very helpful!

Not saying Walgreens was right or even wrong in firing the guy....but seems to me that he might have actually "considered" long-sleeve shirts or even make-up to cover the tatts that were readily seenable....since some of the customers "complained"....

Then again....it's his body and his right to tatt it as much as he pleases!...but it's also the employers right to put forth a "clean and presentable image" for their Company....Would the company have a right to fire someone who didn't bathe and came to work constantly with dirty hair/fingernails/body odor?....It's been done!...

Dunno how this lawsuit will turn out....

I think that he should work at tattoo place, punk shop, Hot Topic, etc.

at grocery store, they have code on how I do with my long hair...

I think Walgreens did the right thing. It gave him two options and he refused. So too bad.

I've heard that if you have more than three tattoos, it may indicate that you have an antisocial personality disorder. I don't know if there's any truth in that.

Oh good! It's nice to know I win at something. :)

I don't mind tattoos unless someone tattoos his face. That looks freaky. Like having eyes on the eyelids so that the person always looks awake.

mostly people who had tattoos and if you get jobs must cover clothes they cant show your tattoo if dont get cover tattoo they cant hires or fired!

i dont use tattoo when i had job at ann taylor i respect rules mostly girls who had tattoo must cover tattoo!!

They did not tell him he could not have tattoos; they told him he had to cover them. Some might be viewed as offensive. He refused. It might have been a swastika and the customer was Jewish. Hard to say.

I say...he loses his case.

Nah. But there is a correlation between the number of tattoos and an individual's propensity to other self harming behaviors.
