VRS on PC

Yes.. I have my own 800 # with CSDVRS.. When a caller calls you using your 800#, you get notification (text message) to your phone that you have incoming call from [CALLER ID] and about 30 seconds later your VP rings.. Too bad Sorenson doesnt have feature like this..

Is that a good thing though?

Sorenson has that too, it's in beta testing now. Some deaf people have their own 800# with Sorenson.

When I went to Sorenson open house in VA Beach, VA early 2007, i heard same thing and said it will be availible to SVRS customer by July 2007.. Well, its May 2008, why is it still in beta testing?? It doesn't take over a year to test simple technology.

I rather have local number, than having toll free #. Toll free number pool is very expensive than toll #.

I don't know why it's still in testing, but it IS available. Some people really do have them. Trust me on this one. ;)

Why does it matter if your number is local or toll free, if you don't pay for it, and people don't have to pay to call you?

If you have a "local" # and once FCC get their act together to let VP customer to make call with our "own" # so the receiving caller will see your #, not sorenson or toll free #.. So # would work BOTH way, not just for incoming calls.. People seeing toll free # typically think its telemarketing calls - I had too many problem with that forcing me to use 2-line (or 3 ways calling) VCO to get around that.

Does that make sense to you?

About me: interpreting since 2002 * RID certified (CI/CT) * Gallaudet undergrad student since 2007 * Formerly went to Western Maryland College * Hearing loss due to scuba diving accident 2006 * Got my first hearing aids 2008 * Love to travel * Happily married for 10 years

Saw your sig tag.. Is your hearing loss prevents you to continue interpetering? I mean does your HA restore your hearing enough to do your job? I just never met an interpreter with hearing aids.

IP-Relay used to have a local number that people could call to you through VRS. Now it only works with IM or pager. Since merging with HOVRS they now want you to use their 800 voice to video number. That's got to be the dumbest move mad by any VRS co. I still use the IP relay number and just get messages so I can call back.

I talked to a tech at sorenson, and I got this reply:

"We are starting to roll out the 1 800 number program to everyone starting last week and over the next couple of months. The beta program is basically finished at this point. But like I said will be available soon. This is included in the new firmware we have been pushing out every week, at about 10,000 new VP's per week."

This is great news!! I look forward to it and put it on my business card. :)

Yes, I am able to keep interpreting thanks to the HA's. That is the main reason I got them. I could probably do okay in everyday life, women's voices are bad for me but I could still manage okay. But because I am an interpreter, I need to hear things right the FIRST time! It's not very nice if the interpreter keeps interrupting and says "could you repeat that?" all the time. There are many HOH interpreters, I work with two on a daily basis and I know several more. Most have HA's for their job. :)
