Hey live interpreter did not freeze. No pause

Its because the line is poor. Bad connection will cause video to go bad no matter what. If clean connection without any interference and correct speed, the VRI will be champ.

sad, some courts use VRI. They do put on hold and postpone the date due to vri being frozen.

I can tell you that having Live Interpreters with no questions are far better to have. But, Having VRI on the other hand sort of is handy to have only if it's in a non life threatening situation.

I tried the VRI only once and hated it. I felt that my communication access was limited. The conversation wasn't as natural as it should be with a live terp. I don't care how wonderful the VRI connection is, I will choose to have a live terp at all times.

I can see the value of a VRI if someone is not able to request an interpreter 1-2 weeks in advance and can set one up when there is a last minute meeting or sudden change in meeting time/date (that happened a LOT at my last job- thus why I could not really utilize interpreter services).

How is your communication access limited? Curious as I've never used VRI, only "live"/in person interpreters though it's been many years sadly- I used to have one for our monthly (or was it weekly...) team meetings. I do wish I had pushed for that more at my last job but they were so notorious for moving meetings around- even the big department monthly meeting at the last minute :P.

I never tried interpreting from any video system. I been working the old- fashion way , interpreting live face to face w deaf clients.
I like it that way :)

The communication access to me was limited because, when you use the VRI - you have to stay in the frame for the terp to see you. Not only that, the doctor will have to be in the frame or close by for the terp to hear/see the doc. The fluidity of the conversation isn't there whenever you want the mobility to move around to sign. There's not any real time response. Also, the connection is known to delay the concentration of what is needed to be said. Body Language is also important. You cannot get that through the VRI.

sadly - with more deaf/hoh requesting terp services, its NOT up to you to request which kind of service you get. they are paying for it , not you so you are stuck unless the VRI video is freezing, and this points out the network issues at THAT place. MOST VRI have good connection and bandwidth so the video is smooth and no issues. I used VRI and I dont have a problem with it. Granted there are some situtations where a live terp is best for all parties concerned, but other times its better to have one and one in VRI like doctors office,SSA, etc. I know of one situation where its better to have a live terp at doctor office and that is when I went in for surgery and I was awake for the whole thing, and doctor needs constant communication to make on the fly decisions.

With you saying VRI sucks tells me you probably had a first bad experience for yourself and you felt powerless and trapped. you need to speak out who asked for VRI and write a letter to upper management.

VRI itself does NOT suck. Its a useful tool when it works.

If I have appt with SS office, I rather request VRI over Interpreter because often I get live terp, it is worse terp than the one though VRI.

Both Live terp and VRI terp each has its advantages and disadvantages

VRI has a big advantage, it is available anywhere where decent high speed internet connection is available and that IT knows shit about firewall. Not many IT are that expert with firewalls, that is why Deaf deal with all kinds of problems. Properly set up firewall offers far better video quality than automatic plug n play version. That is, if closest available terp is 200 miles away, which one you are going to opt for? VRI or that 200 miles away terp that have to drive down to see you?

I have no complains or ill thoughts about VRI. It is just that my experience using VRI wasn't pleasant.

I do agree that in some situation having an VRI is great to have. Obviously, what works for one doesn't work for others.

 for a person with ADHD it does suck. I cannot focus on TV screen you think someone with my issue will pay attention to VRI interpreter? they quit trying with me and gave me real interpreter because of what I am like trying to bounce back and forth its hard for me.

Its okay for normal people in some cases but for other cases its not kay.

I wish I was norm then I would be happy with C-Print as I can understand clearly with written language need Not interpreter but no My add prevents that

world ins't perfect but i do agree with some cases its good for other cases its got its downfall with me and few others i know of.

Well you just cannot tell the SSA over which type of terp. They will pick up and decide. Their own or from the GSA Federal Relay service.
