Voluntary evacuations for all of south Louisiana....

Did you look at time of my post? It was Cat 5 at 165 mph during around 5:15 pm in morning, time is in CST.

Hmmm I am not seeing any reports that it was a Cat 5 early this morning :dunno2:

Hey guys, I realized my goof last night when I saw on the news about the wind speed. I thought it was 150 mph for a Cat 5 level. It is actually 156 as IslandGal said. Thank IslandGal.

Pacman, I asked my guy about Cat 5--He said not a 5. I slept in so I asked him. He has been following this hurricane more than I have this morning.

IslandGal knows her hurricanes so if she says something, listen to her. I find it funny that no one thought of the storm surge. Anyone living near a coastline, even 15 minutes inland would need to evacuate if a hurricane is approaching becuase the storm surge that comes with it, is as deadly as its winds. The storm surge did New Orleans in big time. It will happen if the storm surge is sufficent enough, no matter how strong a hurricane is.

Hurricane Charley that hit seven miles down the road, was a Cat 4 but no flooding. It was more of a wind event. Charley hit a huge eddy in the Gulf and intensifed pronto to almost Cat 4 ( I think) and creamed Charlotte County. The woods help protect but you will still see a lot of damage with a Cat 4.

"no one THOUGHT of the storm surge"??????? I've been thinking about the storm surge since the storm started threatening Louisiana. Now, when I say, "Louisiana", I'm not talking about New Orleans. When I think of Louisiana, I think of Acadiana. If the storm hits Vermilion Bay as they are predicting, then its expecting everything south of IH 10 to flood, and flood severely. If this happens, then all of my families homes will be damaged. Yeah, I've been "thinking" of the storm surge.

Hey DeafDave-- Oops! I should have said "No one thought to discuss storm surge on this thread" I apologize. I didn't mean to say NO ONE thought of this. I need a second cup of tea.....

(crossing fingers) your families' homes will not get damaged....I can't imagine how you feel not knowing where your children are. I'd hopping MAD not knowing. Nothing related to this thread, but it took me 10 minutes just to find my older girl at Chuck E. Cheese's yesterday. She was INSIDE a game booth with other kids watching a wild game. Unbelievable.

I looked to see if this hurricane reached Cat 5 this morning. Nothing but the forecasters were indirectly saying it would have reached Cat 5 if it was not for its interaction with Cuba's western edge. When Gustav went over that area, it dropped the wind speed down to 120 so Gustav is trying to build up again. It was 150 mph last night, very close to the Cat 5 level strength. That's when I realized I goofed about 150 vs 156 for the strength classification.

I'm praying for all of you who are in the path of the storm.

Another storm...hope it won't cause Katrina-like impact. 0.0

For those who are in the hurricane path. You all are in my thought and prayer and please be safe. "hug:

MY STUPID EX-WIFE!!! AHHH!!! I called and told her that I was coming down to get our kids. So, what does she do? She evacuates, with my kids, and doesn't tell me where she is going! I called her house - no answer. Cell phone? She turned it off. This is her way of making me worry about my kids throughout the storm.

That's terrible of her! Communication is VITAL in situations like these and who knows if phone service would be available after the storm passes. Is she doing this on purpose? If so, that is just :cold: and spiteful of her.

Me and my family will not be evacuate, we are staying to protect house. Because of Hurricane Ivan, house almost torn apart. :( So we decide to stay.

WHATTTTT??? I am sorry to be blunt but it could be a Cat 5 hurricane so why would all of you risk your lives like that? Houses can be rebuilts but lives cant once they are taken away.

15 minutes away. Good thing we have beach to protect us.. I have feeling Hurricane turning toward us. It was hunch. I can be wrong. :dunno:

lol being at the beach is probaly the worst place you can be. hurricanes get weaker when the EYE crosses land, not the outer bands which you would be dealing with first anyway. By the time the eye hits land, youre already knee-deep in shit practically from inches and inches of rain, wind gusts thats lasted for hours, tornados spawning, and possible flooding.

real, real safe place to be.

yeah we live on top of hill!

shes not in danger anyway. Hanna on the other hand --possibly.

I just looked at the pics of both storms...yea, she is probably not in too much danger from Gustav since it is passing Florida. My mistake..I thought she lived in Louisiana.

Take a good look where Gustov is. She is in danger if the storm hits Loiusiana. Katrina was a cat 3 when it made landfall. The levees broke.

I don't think I need to say anymore. I just hope her parents and she do the right thing and leave while they can.

The storm is TARGETING Louisiana. If she stays, it won't be pretty for her.
