VNG (Balance Test)/Today's Audi Appointment

Why do you have both 3g and freedom speech processors? why dont you just used one

The Freedom speech processor has many more features than the 3G. The technology it uses is also more advanced.

Lissa,

Did my explanation make sense?

I seem to be having a great deal of difficulty expressing myself today.

I'm going to log off and take a nap. *sigh*

Hear again your explaination is fine, I understood already at first post. Hope the 3 g's is better for you.

Let me try this way for lissa,

Hear again had her left ear implanted in 2004 which is Nucleus 24 implant and 3 g processor. At that time she got 2 3g processors (one to wear and another as spare). This was BEFORE freedom was released (i think)

When she had her right ear implanted in 2006 with Nucleus freedom. She got freedom processor. She also recieved a spare freedom which she had programmed for her Left ear so she had worn freedom in both ears since. She also kept the 3g's aswell incase the freedoms breaks or doesn't work.

Since she had problems with her dizziness they tried the alternatives so therefore she found it comfortable to use 3 g's.

Does it make sense?

Yes she's lucky to have 4 processors!!

Pleasure....

I got your pm and messages... I am really busy at moment, Mum's coming home for 2 weeks on fri (eek!) so I won't be online much!... Look after your self

Hear again look after yourself too...

Charlotte,

:ty: for providing an explanation. :D

Everything you've written is correct except for what you said about the 3Gs. My 3Gs are only used as spares. Since I'm no longer experiencing dizziness whenever I hear with my CIs, we just decided to program the 3Gs in case my Freedoms need repair.

By the way, I told my audi that I still wince every time I hear certain frequencies. We have both come to the conclusion that what is happening is something called recruitment where normal sounds are perceived as uncomfortably loud. She told me this isn't common among CI users (it's far more common among those who wear hearing aids), but it can and does happen. I should mention that I've had recruitment since 1995, so my implants did not cause this to happen.

I'm lucky to have 4 processors, but remember that I'm bilateral and totally blind, so if I only have 2 processors, I would be left with hearing through only one CI (until Cochlear sent a replacement) which would negatively interfere with my ability to travel independently.

Furthermore, if something happened to both of my processors at the same time (such as them being lost in a car accident), I would be 100% deaf (not that this is the end of the world -- it's not -- I'm just pointing out what would happen if I only had 2 processors :))

Hi Liza, I'm glad it's all worked out ok. I'm sorry about the recrutement.

Whilst it's great that more Deafblind people are benifiting from CI's, they won't work for everyone. I only wish they would keep things like tactile aids go so people who can't benifit from CI's or HA's will still have things to provide information about environmental sounds.

Thanks dreama. <smile>

You're exactly right about the deafblind and CIs. I also wish they would develop more tactile aids. I still have a Mowat Sensor, but unfortunately, it is no longer being made. When it finally stops working, I have no clue what I will replace it with since I use it to follow people in line and detect when an elevator door is opening since I can't hear this in background noise. I've tried other devices like the Hand Guide, but they don't compare because their object detection range is severely limited. The vibration they emit is also weaker than that of the Mowat.
