Vista Problem with "My Network Places"

I do a lot of website work, and I upload changes and files via "My Network Places" in Windows XP - I make a connection to the server I'm working on. For example, I do this: 1) go to My Network Places 2) click on Add a Network Place 3) Select Choose Another Network Location 4) type in the web address. Then I'm prompted to enter the username and password, which I have. I have several different network places set up for uploading my files - have been doing this for years.

However, I can't make this work in Vista. First, it took me a while to even find this, but I eventually did. But when I am at step 4, typing in the web address, it absolutely will not accept it -- it tells me the name is not valid, and I've checked and double-checked my typing over and over, and I've got it typed correctly. So I haven't been able to make a single network place on my new laptop that's running Vista. I did some searching online and I found that people were saying that Vista's firewalls and other security products such as Norton (which I have) can prevent this from working. So I disabled the Windows firewall and Norton (temporarily) and I still can't make a network place.

Anyone else have this problem?

I had same problem at customer's Vista for network so I solved it the problem. I am not sure what's exactly you need to do it.

Norton->Go to firewall to add computer's hostname or IP address in trust list that allow other computers connection thru your computer.

Then enable Shared folder and Network Discovery on thru network and sharing center. Vista won't work for shared folder without password.

Hmm .. this didn't work. I'm actually not wanting to let other computers to have a connection through my computer. For example, one of the web servers I'm trying to connect to is Digi by Andi Home Page (it's my site) and when I try to make a connection to that, I still can't.

Vista sucks big.. That's all I know.

I haven't had Vista installed yet but I can do it on VMware in my basment system and see what I can do to figure it out.

Let's cross finger that Windows 7 would change all that!!!!!!

Catty

Quit trolling, Catty. I have 3 computers (one of them being a server) connected to a router - and they can see each other just fine. By the way, guess what? Windows 7 is already based off from Vista; therefore, the networking subsystem in 7 is the same as in Vista (like duh?).

(Oh btw, XP mainstream support finally died yesterday! It's now in extended support)

To the OP (AlleyCat), have you made sure the workgroup or domain name in the Network Places on your Vista laptop the same name as the ones on your desktop and/or webserver? Is IIS even installed or had its service started? What Vista edition do you use on your laptop? And, what web server do you use, the one built in Vista, or on a separate physical server, e.g. Windows Server 2003 or Server 2008? Without much information, there's no way a tech would even help you. (Catty's definitely not a techie guy, obviously!)

If you did check all that and it's still not working, check in with the computing forum Neowin Forums for more further troubleshooting. You have to join the community via creating an account there if you want answers.

Ok gosh, I think much of what you said went right over my head

All kidding aside, I think I do understand what you are saying. However, I don't think it's quite what I was asking about. When I was referring to a server, I wasn't talking about one here at home -- but rather a web host. The site I was referring to is digibyandi.com -- that is my site -- and occasionally I add new files, update pages. And I used to upload those new files and pages via My Network places. I am not sure why I need a "workgroup" as you were mentioning? There are 5 computers in my household, but I don't want (or need) any of them to communicate with mine as they have nothing to do with my site. Am I misunderstanding your reply, Snazzy?

Purplecatty has rights to express his concern about Vista and it's his business, quit being defensive over Vista.

Who does hell care if XP is out of mainstream support but I still have XP for very good reason and you don't have rights to judge on us.

Windows 7 and Vista aren't same but just same NT 6 family and just different system and stability.

Vista isn't perfect OS, anyway.

Many corporations avoided Vista because they are full of bugs and security holes. Much worse than XP, I would never upgrade my PC to Vista. I am sticking with XP.

Don't you know that Micro$oft decided to abandon improvement on Vista and gone ahead with new development of Windows 7? That is because Micro$oft got nasty reputation from general customers, realized that it was not a good product.

So Catty is correct.

I just bought a brand new laptop about 6 weeks ago and Vista was pre-installed on it, hence why I have it and not XP. My other computer uses XP.

Ha, goes to show how much YOU know! MS is about to release Vista SP2.

The press has ripped Vista to shreds, possibly due to many idiotic bloggers saying that they have had many problems. To draw my own conclusions, they probably installed Vista on computers that has the minimum requirements, hence their "awful" experiences. Vista is a good product; it's just the press that ruined it.

Well duh, if they have had better computers already to begin with, then they would not have had many problems. And, don't tell me abt budget issues; why did they even *buy* Vista in the first place anyway? Wasn't XP like that back in 2001? I'm seeing a deja vu here. Get over it already.

To Foxrac, same with you too; get over it. XP has bugs also. XP has security holes also. No OS will ever be perfect. Even Win7 will have bugs also. Stop accusing me for defending Vista.

Btw, to AlleyCat - if you don't want to go deep into your laptop and find the info for the questions I asked earlier, then your best bet would be to go to a tech forum like Neowin.net or if you feel that is a "waste of time," have a tech person come by your house and fix it for you.

Snazzy, I didn't answer your questions because:

1) I don't know what IIS is.
2) I do not use a web server, other than my web host.
3) I do not use anything like Windows Server 2003. I've never needed to.

That's why I think I might not be explaining well enough what I need help on.

Well, IIS is Internet Information Services, which is a web server. Every OS (except WinME, I think) has that service.

Hmm a web host? Then you must have used the other computer that you used to host your web pages. Are you connecting through a network device, like a hub, switch, or router? If so, go to the router address 192.168.1.1. If you don't know the router username and password, look on the bottom of the router and see if they provided that; if you already did try it and it still wouldn't connect to your network, then you have to reset it.

You might need to consult your router manual for configuring it. FYI, it's not Vista's fault; it might be a fault of your network device.

So you want to upload any files to your domain. Correct?

That's entirely correct! :) A friend is helping me with this too. I haven't booted up my laptop with Vista yet today so I have yet to try out his suggestions, but you are right on in that is what I was trying to do. I was not explaining this very well, I don't think.

Yup, it's obviously true, man.

No thanks, man.

You are only one person that need get over it and stop defending on Vista, you just being pathetic and pissed about anything.

XP is far more stable than Vista and security holes aren't difference because both of XP and Vista are Windows family. I do have XP on my PC for very long time and never got issue.

You are obviously don't make any sense.

Oh really? Has it occurred to you that XP have had this decaying-install issue, the one where at first you install XP, then later on it gets slower and slower and eventually you have to reinstall XP to regain lost performance?

Oh wait, Vista and 7 doesn't have that. I challenge you to go to the Neowin.net forums and present your statements that you made to me ...... you'd get burned by all the smartass remarks, I guarantee you that.

All *I* know is that I, along with many others, doesn't have any problems with Vista.

I never got problem with XP, neither is decaying-install issue and I just had to re-install after got attacked by viruses or security issue, I use defrag (third party software, not MS defrag) every month and work so good.

No thanks, I'm not interesting in challenge with you because you and other people are pro-Vista has different opinion, that's your opinion but you were attack at some members, such as Catty and it show like you have no respect to any members who prefer to use XP.

I don't have problem with any consumers who prefer to use Vista but you had turned us off.

Now I get it.

FileZilla - The free FTP solution

This is free software and it's good.

Let me know what your friend's suggestion.
