So I went to my cousin's wedding last week (I'm the only deaf one in the family) and the night before the wedding we all went out to eat at a restaurant. Normally, I am just minding my own business if I get tired of lip reading and usually feel invisible to everyone else. My mother made the comment, in front of everyone "I wish you could hear half of whats going on in the conversation, its so hilarious!" This statement really put me down and felt she was being very insensitive (but my mom doesn't get deaf culture, she still struggles with how shes supposed to act towards me and most of the time it seems demeaning.) Anyways, my cousin (the bride) overheard what my mom said and stopped talking, turned to look directly at me and told me everything she just said. I think she made it a point to make sure I didn't feel left out and I think she sensed how I was feeling then. Later that night, my cousin asked me if I knew ASL and if I'd like an interpreter for her wedding. I told her its entirely up to her, I figured shes got a zillion other things to stress out about.
Fwd to the wedding day, I'm sitting at a table waiting for the wedding to start. This guy comes up to me and asks me if I'm deaf in ASL. He explains to me that my cousin asked him to be my interpreter for the wedding. Ok I told myself I was not going to cry, but after meeting my cousin's friend who's interpreting everything for me I balled my freaking eyes out! Got up and got a glass of wine after that lol. I wasn't sad I was... touched that my cousin, who I haven't seen in years went out of her way to pull this off last min for me. He signed for the wedding ceremony and toasts. After the toast I thanked my cousin for doing that for me and she said "you deserve to enjoy this just as much as everyone else. I love you" Again, balled my eyes out. It's incredible that my family down south (particularly my cousins) always remembers I'm deaf, while my mom and brothers are having to be constantly reminded.
I'm still touched by it you know? The guy did a beautiful job. It's nice to know even 5 hrs away, I have family that does understand and care. I love them and will always remember that moment I felt just as involved as everyone else.
I had to share that, sorry if its a bit sappy, anyone else has a touching story similar to mine or in a sense? *passes tissues boxes around if needed* lol
