Verizon in Talks to Buy Alltel for $27 Billion

You cannot really believe what they say, they are going to trim down some (usually duplicated) jobs as soon they get merged. Same thing happened to BellSouth/Cingular after they merged with AT&T (SBC). The big dogs (upper management) will do anything to silence their employees so they could send them the pink slips when it is time to.

yea that is correct but only sales people took the pink slips after cingular wireless acquired at&t wireless and some employees at bellsouth have to be transfered to another locations. it depends on what dept is like for instance, headquarter of att mobility is in atlanta so we dont have to move to tx which at&t hq is, but some ppl have to move to tx or other locations. no fun ! i am glad my job is security.

Does they will cover the relocation expense if employee is require to move in Texas?

I like Verizon because of voice deals but their unlimited email, text, etc I don't like.

T Mobile charges 29.99 a month unlimited emails, text, etc, then add more if you want voice. I can pay about 75 dollars a month with email and voice. Alot cheaper than verizon. But I love the family plans through verizon though.

I learn that alltel have far better coverage than verzion. In fact, far better coverage than any other wireless carrier service

Alltel, America's Largest Network? - Engadget Mobile
that was 2 years ago.
I'm sure every coverage have change since 2 years ago...

ALLTEL still have the largest footprint than any carrier.. Now I saw the 2 coverage by Alltel and Verizon, damn, it nearly total covered whole USA.. Only major gap I can see is in KY. I guess VZ will have largest footprint... As Chad would say to other carriers: "Who's your daddy?" Now I can see VZ telling Chad: "Now WHO IS YOUR DADDY???"

As for keeping the job, I will have to find out after the merge is closed.. Meaning time, it is business as usual.

Good luck keeping the job Richard, that's really the important thing whenever there's a merger. You all do a great job here. I hate to see us one more step closer to the days where there was a monopoly in the telecom industry, but it seems to be heading that way.

A year ago I really thought alltel could buy out Metro, or Leap, or win some key 700 MHz spectrum and go National by getting some airwave licenses for the Northeast and west coast. But I guess the 22 billion in debt that TPS and GS took on to buy them out was too much to overcome in this credit market. I guess when my contract is up, it'll be time to re-compare to find the best deal again because Verizon costs so much more. But alltel was so awesome because you had great plans with my circle, and generally fantastic coverage, along with roaming agreements for coast-to-coast coverage in areas they didn't have any spectrum. And I'm sure Verizon has plans to buy out Bluegrass and maybe Appalachian Wireless in Kentucky, they already got Ramcell in the Southeastern corner of the state late last year.

Windstream is spinoff of ALLTEL's wireline in 2006.. It would be cool to see Windstream buy some of divested markets from VZ.

Who's the Next Alltel?

Now that Verizon Wireless has acquired Alltel, who’s next to get snatched up?

That’s the question Wall Street’s asking, hoping to cash in on another big deal, but Cramer said Thursday there might be a better opportunity.

Before the buyout goes through, the Justice Department will most likely force Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone , to divest some of its business that overlaps with Alltel . The usual suspects – Qwest , Sprint Nextel , AT&T – for any number of reasons, just aren’t in position to take advantage of the opportunity. So that leaves an opening for a smaller company like Windstream to step up.

Windstream was formed back in 2006 when Alltel, with the goal of becoming a pure wireless play, merged its wireline business with Valor Communications. The new company serves as a “rural local exchange carrier,” bringing regular phone service to some of the most rustic parts of the U.S. These RLEC’s are slow-growth, high-yield stocks – think Embarq, Iowa Telecommunications , Citizens Communications or Consolidated Communications – but the leftovers from VW-Alltel deal give Windstream the chance to be much more.

When you add some healthy wireless business to the company’s portfolio, Cramer said, WIN becomes a growth stock. Windstream might even then become the very regional telco Wall Street’s searching so hard for right now – the next Alltel.

If Windstream doesn’t make the moves Cramer expects, there’s always the dividend yield – 7.6% – for a steady stream of income.
