Vacation renters refuse to leave, force woman from home

It sound very much like housesitting but then seem to like the place so much that they refused to move out. If they are not paying for the room, then they should be evict out of their room. But if the landlord who live in the house could not evict them because of Airbnb who was renting to the couple and then not have any responsibility over the couple who refuse to leave the house.

Yep, we all have to learn the hard way not realizing that we should check their background before renting to them. That is sad. :(

I remember watching a reality show about property management and there were professional squatters who had managed to stay rent-free for over 6 months. And they were only able to kick them out because one of them was cooking moonshine, which violates fire safety codes.

Unbelievable I know but that's what they had to do just to kick them out.

I should be a professional squatter so I can use the money I normally pay for my mortgage to pay for bills. Oh wait...I have a kid...never mind. :naughty:

They do have the right to evict but the process takes a long time. Sadly, the people who do this know all the in's and out's and become professional squatters.

Yes. Thus the lesson here. If you will rent out and be a landlord then you must be as deligent with knowing all the in and outs the law as those who mwy rent from you.
The onus is on YOU to know the law and all its loopholes. If you wont do that then you shouldnt rent out period.
Cant blame others for knowing all the in and outs of the rules when you didnt tske the time or effort to also know them...
Protect yourselF. no on else will..

I don't understand how is that possible - what rights as tenants if you just illegally squat?

either you pay so you can live somewhere or you do not pay in which case you get evicted for "not paying". you get a warning period of -I don't know how many weeks - to come up with a payment and if still not paid, it's  bye bye

If the tenant is not paying, the landlord has rights, too - TO EVICT.

what the heck is wrong with this picture? why Poonam Sandhu can't just call the police and threw them out? I don't get it.

It does not work that way . You have to bring the tenant to court and let the judge decides if you can evict a tenant for non payment. That is what I had to do . I won the case b/c I gave my tenant 2 months to pay me the rent she gave half of the rent when I was in middle of taking her to count and that was too late . I did NOT cash her check , I did try to cash it after I took her to court , she had put a stop on the check . I was not surprise about this but thought I would see if the check was any good.
My rent was very reasonable and I got call from the Welfare office b/c they wanted me rent to one of their client and I said "NO". I knew if I did and that tenant stopped paying rent I would be stuck with them forever. They had a lot more rights than I did . The law really suck sometime and being a landlord is one of them.

Works similer here.
Once cash exhchanges hands theyvr a tenent with rights. Like every one else. In order to evict there is a process. every wannabe landlord and landlord should take the time to study and know the law well. You need to give notice. And if they refuse to leave you need to let the system work. Or you will end up the loser long run. Notice is 60 days. With the reason to evict. then court. You need to get the sharif to come and drag them out once the eviction is Accepted.
Or
They easier and cheaper and still legel way is to make it worth it for them to go.
and be creative.
Beside That.
Be wise.
Choose your tenents wisely. Allot of money allot of time can be saved if YOU choose your tenents wisely...
Its really up to you...

I know many people in California forced themselves to sell the house because of renters refuse to leave.

When I was looking at 2 families houses to buy I saw one that still had a tenant that refuse to move . He was an old man in a W/C and this apartment was a mess . My sister was with me and she told the realtor said I should throw guy out on the street like the trash he is. I did not heard this and I was disgusted with the realtor and got another one. I did not buy that house , I just did not have heart to evict the old man . My dad brought an apartment building he was going to have knocked down and there was an old couple that did not want to move. Dad found them another apartment and paid the rent for them.

Thanks for an explanation WDYS.
Looks like before anyone let tenants in, you need an ironclad agreement for both sides. this way you protect yourself in case like this.

here however I begin to understand the responsible party is Airbnb, and it's not the first time when I hear a complain about this company.
here in BC there was a case of an owner having her private property rented out to stranger while she was still living there. she realized that someone was sleeping in her bed while she was on vacation, without her knowing about it.
it was Airbnb screw up. they weren't going to fix it up until she went to TV with her story.

I know many people in California forced themselves to sell the house because of renters refuse to leave.

The house I brought in California was being rented out by seller and I was not able to see both bedrooms ,the tenant was telling people he owned the house and was renting out a bedroom for $500 . After I moved in with my child I had 2 people coming to my house looking for that guy b/c both person gave him $500 to move in and either person got a receipt to prove they gave the guy the $$$. I had new locks put on my door after this happen . And I got a dog to warn me if anyone came near my home with my child in it. When I lived in Northern California people would build a shack anywhere they felt like it and lived there. I was going to rent one house but I had to walk across a log over water to get to the house and my dog was not able to that and I did not feel like having to carry food while crossing on a log.

Ah i lived in b.c. one of my old homes...
How is airbnb the responsible party?
If one chooses to uses its services without knowing fully all the ramifications, snd the others who take advantage of it.
Isnt it at bottom the responsibility of the home owners who decide to rent out their home to strangers via a second company? Why not sue the actual people who are causing the issue?
Its like anything anyone purchases online right?
Or am i missing something?

I don't fully understand how this works, and my mistake,
it was in Montreal Quebec, not BC. for some reason they were talking about it about half a month ago or so on the telly news
- here is the whole story:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/montreal-landlord-shocked-to-find-airbnb-tenants-in-apartment-1.1949852

the group of strangers was renting thru Airbnb who was hired, I suppose by the tenant who was renting from the owner Letarte Pettas - to the best of my understanding.
The thing is, Airbnb should have first contacted the owner of the apartment and check if the renting is at all possible, and they didn't do that.

I saw a story on the news about a woman who had rented her house out and the people would not leave , the home owner had to end paying the jerks money to get out her house. People had suggested that I should rent out my extra bedroom and I so happy that I never took this advice.

yeah, it is scary, on the other hand most people are reasonable, honest human beings and cause no trouble. I think it is very important to thoroughly check the references.
I wonder if Poonam Sandhu have checked the previous landlords of these people? maybe she didn't, or Airbnb didn't?

The person that owns the unit upstairs over mine was not checking people she rented to . She was just concerned will not losing any money so she rented to anyone and she had to kick out a mother and her 30 yo alcoholic son . The damn fool was throwing his cigarette butts on my wooden deck and on the mulch . He could had started a fire. The son was known to the polices. I really think allowing people to rent out their units in a condo is a bad idea. We end up getting some really sleazy people.

wow :eek3:
at least they got kicked out with no plm! imagine what life would be if they turned out to be like these professional squatters :eek3: :eek3: :eek3:

I hope people don't get any ideas on how to be professional squatters.

It would make this hard for me to rent a place even for one night. They would have to do a background check on me. Is it worth the trouble?

One of the fool cigarette butts landed on my chair on my deck and thanks goodness it was a plastic chair and only got a burnt mark on it . If the butt
had landed my wooden deck it could had start a fire. I once found a cigarette that been lite and the fool much had been so drunk that he dropped it and it landed on my deck . The polices had to put the guy into
protective custody a few times . I went to the police station as I wanted to know what he was arrested for , a neighbor told this . I was told he was taken in for protective custody . In other words the polices had to babysit the guy so he would not hurt himself while being drunk out his mind.
