"WTF!?" as one might say but unfortunately there are some Deaf people who do think this way. It is just unfortunate that some are unable to hear or enjoy music where others can just as it is just unfortunate that those who are completely blind are unable to enjoy the colors and nuances in a painting. Though there are those who do try and "interpret" what's being heard or seen. Still, how can one describe colors to a person who never seen color and texture in a painting? How can one describe the notes, the chords, and the melody of a music if one never heard a note to begin with? Not saying it'd be impossible but certainly a challenge!

Well, for some odd reason Carl thinks that for those who play a piano is a tool used to oppress ASL (and Deaf people).

It's called "music," Carl. Nothing about oppressing Deaf or ASL.

I don't think the majority of deaf are against music or playing a musical instrument. I used to play the autoharp at MSSD. I do remember an outspoken minority of deaf being against it.

I knew a Deaf girl from a Deaf family who could play the piano better than I could and I come from a muscial family.

I am not a part of whatever group who thinks that way. I have Deaf friends who have iPods and they enjoy listening music. :dunno:

Dear Koko,

Keep in mind that this is the same person that refused to subtitle his vlogs and you were the sweet gentleman that helped me when I was going through a very rough time accepting my deafblindness.

I was trying to show to vloggers that subtitling, in my perspective, enabled me to be involved with the vlogging community but with Karl's "ASL militant" attitude, it made situations worse.

A lot of vloggers were happy to subtitle their vlogs until Karl spoke up saying subtitling dragged down the "purity" of ASL videos and "disabled" future ASL learners.

This is where we all have to look at ourselves and realise that it's the other people that have issues, not us.

Dear Koko, it's Karl's issues.. not yours.

I love music still to this day.. it was by sound at first and now I learn by vibration. It's tragic that some people choose to close themselves off to their tactile mind and heart because "their community" doesn't believe the piano exists.

Just too bad that such a negative attitude can really affect a community on the whole but it is up to all of us to ignore this attitude.

 Koko!! You're a great friend because you've been there for me.

My response will be ... suck to be him. I watch few of his vlogs. How can I describe him? I would say.... Neo-Deaf-Nazi since he shares so much negatives, hates, and whines.

I love music myself. I was offered to learn how to play the piano but one instrument I have a love is... drums :)

Well, I notice he is ancient, and I think insane.

Of course I am now learning to play the piano!

Thanks. I know it's his issue. I guess we know who is really blind when it comes to music. Not only it was a put down but a non-sequitur moment by tossing in an ASL and the so called "oppression" spiel. Made no sense but a lot of B.S. And this was certainly an attempt to try and get people to feel guilty about playing the piano. Well, that's not gonna stop me or others from playing the piano or any musical instrument for the sake of "PURITY."

apparently, its his own bitter from his experience childhood that he was forced to play piano.

I think musics are beautiful, and playing a musical instruments are so awesome!

Well said Frisky!

You can see how his mouth starts to curt up when he mentions his daughter taking piano as an elective course.

Watch the link again! Carl didn't say that he personally think playing piano is oppressing the Deaf/ASL. He said "the piano is just a thing. It is nothing".

Buffalo,

Carl doesn't need to say the sentence itself, per se. Just watch the whole vlog and you can easily read between the signs itself.

His statement " From mine and the Deaf Community's perspective...." He pretty much said what he stated above.

Carl wrote in his blog,

"Carl Schroeder argues that piano is just a thing to oppress ASL."

It also leads to the idea or conclusion that by playing a piano, which is just a thing, it oppresses Deaf/ASL as well. A musical instrument by itself isn't oppressive just as a drum by itself cannot possibly oppress Deaf people or ASL. Same thing for a piano. I agree. It may be just a "thing" but "oppressive"? How? It just sits there. How would it be any different if a large drum sits there in the same room? A piano is a percussion piece since it involves striking the strings (key moves hammer that strikes a string of a particular note). Same as a drum which involves striking the drum's skin to make a loud sound. So, anything that relates to the hearing world is all about oppressing Deaf/ASL?? A bit absurd, I'd say. If it's just a "thing" then it means nothing to some people then it cannot oppress. Just as a flute or clarinet means nothing to me but until somebody plays a beautiful song then it means something to me as well as people who enjoy music. The taste varies from person to person, including Deaf people, when it comes to music. If it's just a thing it cannot possibly oppress because it's just a....thing. But don't go around saying it oppresses Deaf or ASL. Pretty audacious and ludicrous at the same time.

He said "In Deaf Community and my language, people argue that ..."

Whoa! Whoa!

Buffalo really got it...I watched it again. Carl said in the Deaf community and his culture, people argue that it oppresses ASL and Deaf people. Carl is saying that "no, it doest cuz a piano is just a thing." So, Carl was actually disagreeing with the discussion among the Deaf community that the use of piano is oppressive.

Now, the point of his vlog makes sense.

He said "In Deaf Community and my language, people argue that ..."

I'm not able to view 3-D on vlogging which is why I asked for subtitling in the first place. Carl vehemently disagreed against this.

You see how I can misunderstand him signing. Even when he states this.. he still goes against the piano-playing.

What else do we need to show?:hmm:

The statement "Carl Schroeder argues that piano is just a thing to oppress ASL" doesn't mean that Carl argues in support of piano or against piano. He has been saying that the piano just sits there. That is why he said "the piano is just a thing. It is nothing".

He didnt say anything about being against them. They just hold no meaning to him because he grew up watching his family play the piano and remembered nothing significant about it.

Right...his point was to empasize that there is no need for an argument about the piano cuz it is just a thing, like the CI.

A cochlear implant is not a thing.

For you, you may call it a thing, but to another person who relies on a CI solely would call it another word.
