Laura Ling & Euna Lee

LAURA LING AND EUNA LEE ARE COMING HOME

Current Media journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who have been detained in North Korea since March 17th, will be coming home on Wednesday morning with former President Bill Clinton, who is at this moment returning from North Korea having obtained their release.

We want to thank the Obama Administration for its continuous and determined efforts to achieve this outcome, and President Clinton for his willingness to undertake this mission.

All of us at Current are overjoyed at Laura and Euna's safe return. Our hearts go out to them – and to their families – for persevering through this horrible experience.

We will have more to say in the days and weeks ahead. But for now, all our thoughts are with Laura and Euna and their families, who have shown remarkable courage and initiative for the 140 days of this ordeal.

exactly. Those 2 unfortunate journalists were employed by Gore's company. Naturally - Gore should be the one to go there and apologize.
A business executive with a heart? Concerned about the fate of his/her employees? Must be a Liberal.
(see, I can find ways to slant news stories)

Al Gore is a businessman. Business people negotiate naturally, when it come to making deals. Plus He had been the vice president for 8 years, and had been to the countries before. He has connections with foreign leaders, politicians, and DC. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being concerned over those two Current-employed journalists. He is a human being first. It absolutely has nothing to do with this Liberal nor Conservative.

I was thinking - WTF was Gore doing in here? what business does he have with this?? then I read some more and learned that 2 journalists were employed by Gore..... :hmm:

I've been reading reports the past several months that the journalists were warned several times by the NK military regarding crossing the border. They were doing the story on refugees. However, I am not going to comment on this until the journalists confirm it or not.

Media at fault?

We are aware there have been reports that Bill Clinton had apologized for the incident.

"While Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rejected the Korean official report that said Bill Clinton had delivered an apology about the incident to the country's ailing leader, Kim Jong Il."

Hillary Clinton said that "that's not true. That did not occur."

I'm glad that these women got to go home to their family! :)

oh gee... i think you read too much about Gore's business.. it's as if it's a horrible thing that a business decided to save two women.

? my point is - those 2 were employed by Gore and it is Gore who are supposed to go in to apologize, not Clinton.

too bad NK rejected Gore as an envoy as said in previous post.

I'm sure Kim cared about Gore more than Clinton.... Gore is a much more important man, oh wait Clinton was ACTUALLY president. Please, do you think Kim gives a hoopola about Gore? Mariah Carey could come in as an "ambassador" and make a greater effect than Gore!!!

If the goal is "Get those two women out of NK.", most likely sending Gore isn't the best solution....

Ya know what's funny though? I could be wrong, but I didn't see ANYTHING about the 2 women being caught and thrown in jail in the media prior to Clinton's visit. If Clinton didn't visit and the media blew this story out in the open, how much do you wanna bet that somehow Gore or even Obama would get SO much smack for leaving those girls in NK?

Sometimes I am amazed by how much politicians get f***ed over no matter what they do.

true that!

When all of them return home to US as Clinton happy to see Gore....

“They shook hands first, and than hugged for a full five seconds, with Mr. Clinton patting his hand along Mr. Gore’s back and lingering before moving on to greet the waiting family members.” Nothing beats a good grundle-pumping on the tarmac.

I'm umm shock. Maybe Kim Jong Il asked Clinton to suck his tool to make deal. And yet, Clinton feel like a nightmare and suddenly so happy to see Gore. hmmm.... Just my wild guess. lol

Steve Bing to Pay $200K for Clinton Korea Trip

Hollywood mogul Steve Bing didn't just lend Bill Clinton his private plane for the former president's trip to North Korea -- he's footing the cost of the whole flight.

Bing, a real estate heir and the owner of Shangri-La Entertainment, will pay an estimated $200,000 for the round-trip flight, said Marc Foulkrod, the chairman and CEO of Avjet, the charter company that operates Bing's plane, a Boeing 737.

Clinton used the plane on his trip to secure the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two American journalists held by North Korea on allegations that the two illegally entered the country.

A representative for Bing said he was not available for interviews.

Bing, a long-time friend of Clinton's, has a colorful background: He fathered a child with supermodel Elizabeth Hurley and once sued billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, claiming that private investigators hired by Kerkorian invaded his privacy by sorting through his garbage.

Bing is also known for donating millions to the Democratic Party and Democratic candidates, including Clinton's wife, former presidential candidate-turned-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Bing will pay the six-figure tab for the trip as part of his monthly bill for Avjet's services, Foulkrod said.

"There's a very large team at Avjet team involved in all categories, from maintenance operations, to scheduling to fuel," Foulkrod said. "It was very much an involved process."

Though government officials initially described the flight as a "private" trip by Clinton, Foulkrod said that travel preparations were closely coordinated with the Air Force, the U.S. State Department, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

"The logistics required services, permits, visas," he said. "We could not do this without an unprecedented level of cooperation."

Foulkrod estimated that aviation fuel costs for the trip will total $20,000. On the way from Burbank, Calif., to Pyongyang, the 18-seat jet stopped at American Air Force bases in Alaska and Japan to refuel, Foulkrod said. It stopped once in Japan on the way back. The Air Force, he said, will bill Avjet for the fuel costs.

Communication costs -- namely a bill for using a satellite phone necessary for diplomatic phone calls -- could amount to $15,000, he said.

Other expenses include maintenance costs, catering expenses, landing fees and other incidental costs.

The Dow Chemical company also provided support for the Clinton trip. Foulkrod said that a Dow plane flew Clinton to Burbank before the trip began.

Dow said in a statement today that the company was "grateful that Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee are back home safely and we were honored to contribute to President Clinton's humanitarian mission to obtain their release."

At a press conference this morning, Ling thanked Dow, its CEO Andrew Liveris, Bing and a host of others, including government officials and members of Clinton's team, for their work in helping bring the journalists home.

On the second page from the link, it should say $200,000, not $20,000. Its typo error.

Ive been reading different reports..

A few articles, including Huffingtonpost.com states that
"The North Koreans rejected other offered envoys including Al Gore (as the co-founder of Current TV he would be seen merely as their boss pleading on behalf of his employees, and besides he was only Clinton's vice president and a failed presidential candidate) and John Kerry (also a failed presidential candidate and merely the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee)."

The U.S. government — particularly Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — had been working for months on trying to free the two journalists. The secretary of state reportedly proposed sending various people to Pyongyang, including Clinton’s former vice president Al Gore, to lobby for the women’s release.

But North Korea rejected Gore and other possible envoys like Senator John Kerry, Governor Bill Richardson and former ambassador to South Korea Donald Gregg. Pyongyang wanted President Clinton and passed that word along through the two detained journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who were making occasional phone calls to their families.

North Korea had long made it clear that it expected a high-profile visit on behalf of the journalists, but Gore may not have been acceptable because he was viewed as their boss and thus not an appropriate symbol of the United States. Other potential envoys considered by the administration included Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) and a former ambassador to South Korea, Donald Gregg.

The U.S. reportedly planned to send Gore as a special envoy, but the North rejected the offer, apparently in hopes that Washington would send a top-level government official authorized to discuss pending political issues.

The North Koreans made it clear "that they wanted a high level political figure" to come negotiate the journalists' release, said Korea specialist and former Clinton-era counselor of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency Donald Gross. "They have been insisting for a long time on a high-level [envoy]," he said. "It gives them a lot of face and ... prestige. It demonstrates a high-level commitment by the U.S. of working with North Korea. They wanted someone who could meet Kim Jong Il at his level."

There had been several contenders for the job, said Chris Nelson a veteran Washington foreign-policy watcher who covers Asia policy extensively in his daily newsletter, the Nelson Report. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "has been trying to send [U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy] Stephen Bosworth since March," Nelson said. "I know Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) has been trying to go. [Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations] Bill Richardson has been trying to go. They have been talking with and through the NY connection. ... So there was a lot of back and forth using the New York channel. [Senate Foreign Relations Committee Asia staffer] Frank Jannuzi was involved in a lot of this stuff on Kerry's behalf. So this goes back. They wanted to go and bring those girls home."

Well, some articles report that the White House had been considering sending John Kerry, New Mexico Gov. Richardson, or former ambassador to South Korea, Donald Gregg to North Korea as an envoy, but it did not indicate that North Korea rejected John Kerry.

Uh, John Kerry? I guess, North Korea likes attention.

so USA was working on finding a very high-level US Representative..... and Bill Clinton went without White House's knowledge.

I'm somewhat particularly bothered by that. I don't know why. :hmm:

KCNA is the state news agency of NK. I am questioning KCNA's official report that indicates Bill Clinton delivered an apology, but the US officials and Hillary Clinton stated that's not true. KCNA is misleading his own North Koreans that Bill Clinton apologized for the incident, and the photos of Bill Clinton and him together to make Kim Jong Il look good, you know a great leader, which he is NOT.

Censorship sucks.

Yes, but we get censored news here as well. Don't kid yourself.
It is all a propaganda ploy by NK, showing the world how powerful they are. Posturing themselves as strong. Funny how a former president can be used as a tool for NK's self esteem issues.
BTW, are we sure that is the real Kim Jong II? He is not doing well health-wise. There were rumors of his death not long ago. Maybe an imposter/standin?

Have you seen recent photos of Kim Jong Il with Bill Clinton? He appears to be thinner due to stroke last year. His clothes are slightly loosen.

If you are having any doubt, you can ask Bill Clinton via mail. ;) He met him in person.

It seems like Kim Jong-il ate alot of salts since NK put alot of salts in food at hard labor camp.

Well, I doubt he would take time out to reply to me. BTW, he has a reputation as not always telling the truth. :giggle:
