ughhh....interpreter issues at school...

hi guys

today wasn't so bad. I didn't want to talk to my 'terp mostly because i was pretty much done with her. My mom has called the school and squealed on the special ed coordinator and said that she will investigate.

So hopefully things will be back on track

Is your interpreter an actual interpreter. Certified and registered with national or state bodies, and graduated from an interpreter training program? If not chances are this person is an education assistant who knows ASL. In which case things are different. That is normally the case in elementary and high schools.

Everyone is right. Feedback is important. This is something I had a hard time with before but I make sure all of my interpreters know what I need and what my preferences are (ie. ASL, no mouthing, sign preferences, etc.) Without telling them I can't get angry with them for doing something different. If you don't tell them they can't be expected to match your needs.

In my experience as a Deaf Ed teacher, I have found that a majority of educational interpreters are not certified and probably not fluent enough in ASL to correctly convey the concepts being taught.

To the OP, your rights to equal access to education are not being met so I hope you get this solved. It is a violation of your IEP and possible grounds for a lawsuit.

Please start documenting everytime she fails to interpret for you in a class, shows up late, or leaves early.

wow. im actually going to school to become an ASL interpreter. i cant believe she was so rude to you! i mean texting, complain telling you that you should know what to do. and your second year of highschool is one of the most if not the most important to a student.

i mean if she dont have the patience for it then she shouldnt waste your time. i know 'terps who do it soley for the money. i pray to God that never becomes my reason

when ppl ask me why i choose ASL interpretation as my major, i always tell them because no one ask to be deaf/hoh and ive see many ppl struggle with it and i want to be someone who helps them.

i hope the school decides to let jennifer be your interpreter. gl

I just want to chime in here a bit. It sounds like you're doing it because you feel deaf people deserve pity - that it's awful for them to live with the curse of deafness. As a HOH person and an interpreter, I have seen that reality is much different. There's occasionally deaf people who feel sorry for themselves, but most Deaf people (big D) are pretty much fine with it, even happy about it. So if you want to help people get their business done, get an education, and meet each other, that's great! But do it because you're someone who is gifted with the ability to hear and use sign language, because you can use your skills to benefit others...not because you worry they are struggling and need your help. Give of yourself simply because you have something to give. :yesway:
