Because they're a bunch of idiots is my best guess. Federal government too, of course. The reasons for the federal government's refusal is in the article you posted: "But the water does contain some oil residue, and that is too much according to US environment regulations."

Seems nonsensical to me, but hey, bureaucracies and common sense are like water and oil- they just don't mix. (ba dum dum *cymbal crash*)

I didn't really press him and I'm not too sure he knows a lot of details about it. I'll ask him more about it the next time I see him. I did a bit of googling and found this article which may answer some of your questions. Apparently, the Saudi government managed to keep the whole thing a secret, so not a lot is known. I didn't really press him and I'm not too sure he knows a lot of details about it. I'll ask him more about it the next time I see him. And then you have red tape interferring as well like this latest fiasco where the skimmers (our barges) were docked because they didn't have enough life vests and fire extinguishers on board.

Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state’s oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor’s wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.

“It’s the most frustrating thing,” the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. “Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges.”…

[T]he Coast Guard ordered the stoppage because of reasons that Jindal found frustrating. The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges…

“They promised us they were going to get it done as quickly as possible,” [Jindal] said. But “every time you talk to someone different at the Coast Guard, you get a different answer.”

Yeah, I'd swear they wanted this mess to occur in their chess moves to somehow take control of the oil industry. Can you say, "nationalization"? Might as well get Hugo Chavez on board, it wouldn't make any difference.

We'll have to wait and see...

Seeing that handful of high seats responsible for oil oversight are mostly Republicans in oilmen's pocket... seems like their ulterior motive is to destroy the environment since it's federally protected. With that roadblock removed... they'll be able to drill baby drill. ka-ching!

Let remove the regulation on oil drilling and you are free to discover and drill the oil whatever you want, I will watch you on TV.
