Maybe not so much now, but earlier on, it could have made a huge difference. That's the point. However, it sounds like it would still be wise to use them since they're apparently capable of picking up more oil than is currently leaking out.

so why didn't BP bring them in? or push for it? I mean... a cap? junk shot? nice.....

so why didn't BP get the skimmers in quickly?
Because they're a bunch of idiots is my best guess. Federal government too, of course. The reasons for the federal government's refusal is in the article you posted: "But the water does contain some oil residue, and that is too much according to US environment regulations."

Seems nonsensical to me, but hey, bureaucracies and common sense are like water and oil- they just don't mix. (ba dum dum *cymbal crash*)

few questions -
1. what was the process used for that?
2. oil leak worse than this? in terms of amount released to ocean or what?
3. how long did it take them to clean it up?
4. in the end - what was the result of environmental & economical damage?
I didn't really press him and I'm not too sure he knows a lot of details about it. I'll ask him more about it the next time I see him. I did a bit of googling and found this article which may answer some of your questions. Apparently, the Saudi government managed to keep the whole thing a secret, so not a lot is known. Could Cleanup Fix for Gulf Oil Spill Lie in Secret Saudi Disaster?

And then you have red tape interferring as well like this latest fiasco where the skimmers (our barges) were docked because they didn't have enough life vests and fire extinguishers on board.

Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state’s oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor’s wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.

“It’s the most frustrating thing,” the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. “Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges.”…

[T]he Coast Guard ordered the stoppage because of reasons that Jindal found frustrating. The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges…

“They promised us they were going to get it done as quickly as possible,” [Jindal] said. But “every time you talk to someone different at the Coast Guard, you get a different answer.”

Jindal pounded the table and got it going again.

Man, can we say "Obama's Katrina" times 10?

Geez......It's like the Feds are trying to soak the beaches with oil.......nah couldn't be that

Yeah, I'd swear they wanted this mess to occur in their chess moves to somehow take control of the oil industry. Can you say, "nationalization"? Might as well get Hugo Chavez on board, it wouldn't make any difference.

We'll have to wait and see...

Seeing that handful of high seats responsible for oil oversight are mostly Republicans in oilmen's pocket... seems like their ulterior motive is to destroy the environment since it's federally protected. With that roadblock removed... they'll be able to drill baby drill. ka-ching!

Didn't Chavez carry a parrot on his shoulder once in a picture I think I saw one time? Squawking, "Obama want a cracker!"

*both do da the terrorist fist bump thang*

Sure, let adopt socialism policy in US and kick all media, including Fox News out. ;)

They won't kick them out. They'll be nationalized news media and become a dictator's mouthpiece. Oooh, wait a min.... I forgot about the MSM and Obama.

Never mind.

You are probably right and take your freedom away as well.

Let remove the regulation on oil drilling and you are free to discover and drill the oil whatever you want, I will watch you on TV.

More money for you.
