Police arrested two teens early this morning after they allegedly assaulted a deaf man who was attending a party in Antioch with a group of other deaf people, police reported today.

The party was being held in a garage at 3420 Longview Road when, at about 1 a.m., 18-year-old Phillip Hale and a 17-year-old boy reportedly approached the group.

The two teens began taunting and mimicking the deaf people until one of them told the pair to leave, police reported.

The two teens left, but reportedly returned later with a large wooden stick, a concrete brick and a garden hoe.

The pair assaulted a 23-year-old deaf man, causing a minor injury to his head, police reported.

While fending off his attackers, the victim struck Hale in the head, injuring him as well.

Police arrived to find `substantial amounts of blood` in front of two homes. They contacted the group of deaf people inside the garage and found the victim.

Police found Hale and the juvenile several blocks away. Hale was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of his head injury before being booked into county jail in Martinez.

The juvenile was transported to juvenile hall, also in Martinez.

Antioch police say they arrested two teenagers on suspicion of a hate crime early Sunday after they taunted a group of deaf people at a party and attacked one of them.

Phillip Hale, 18, and a 17-year-old boy attacked the victim because of his disability, according to Antioch police Cpl. Michael Hulsey.

The 1:02 a.m. attack occurred in the 3400 block of Longview Road.

Police responded to a report of a fight, found blood in front of two residences and then found a group of deaf people in a garage, including the victim.

The victim and witnesses told police that Hale and the 17-year-old approached them and taunted and mimicked them.

One partygoers told them to leave and they did, but police said they returned with a stick, a hoe and a concrete brick and a fight ensued.

The victim suffered a minor head injury during the ensuing fight.

Police found Hale and the 17-year-old a few blocks away.

Hale was treated for a head injury at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and then was taken to County Jail in Martinez, where he was being held in lieu of $135,000 bail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, as well as a the hate crime allegation.

Police took the 17-year-old to Juvenile Hall. He was not identified.

It was the third possible hate-related incident in East Contra Costa during the past month.

A home on Douglas Drive was ransacked and spraypainted with racial epithets on Aug. 22.

The family's 2007 Nissan Armada SUV was stolen and recovered by Oakland police a few days later in the Oakland hills after it had been stripped and set afire.

That investigation is continuing.

On Aug. 12, the Islamic Center of the East Bay was the target of an arson fire that gutted the building and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage. The mosque had been broken into and vandalized in three prior incidents this year.

Police are still investigating the fire but have said they found no evidence to indicate the arson was religiously motivated, although the members believe it was.

That's a horrid thing to happen. I read about that the day after it happened. Antioch's not too far from where the Bay Area is...it's about um...2 hours south-east from where I live.
