TV captions

I, too, find the captions to be useful as well. As for the subtitles, I find it somewhat annoying. For instance, I'd be watching a movie on DVD that has subtitle features included and most of the time, they have the white colored subtitles which makes it a bit hard to read especially when the white subtitles are shown in light background. Personally, I find the yellow subtitles easier to read because it blends in very well with light or dark colored background.
That's understandable.

Do you watch widescreen or fullscreen versions of movies?

Subtitles will sometimes show up on the black bar of wide screen movies. ;)

I agree that captions are useful. I prefer to watch TV without my HA, so I can lay down without listening to feedback from my HA. But, it is hard to enjoy television when the size and the location of the captions obstructs the picture.

Feed back? Isn't it just like mumbled voices that you couldn't understand, no?

Look how clean subtitles look against captions. They don't take up so much space even when a character is making a long speech.

The other problem I find with captions, is what is already mentioned. For example, captions not updating and is stuck on the screen.

That only causes when the static interferes and the tv makes a static noises, and it blocks the gateway where they retrieves the captions, that is why captions freezes and it is really annoying, you need to move around with your anteena, or change channel then back to clear it out.

It is good to know that a set-top box can give the viewer some control over the style of captions.

Yep!

if all tv stations were smashed. We all would have more time to spend with family like we should and do more constructive things.

Yeah, that's true, but it should've been smashed way, way back in the 1950's

No, feedback as in noise from HA when HA is covered. Like putting a telephone over your ear without switching your HA telecoil, unless you have a "Rolls-Royce" HA that does everything automatically for you..:)

Yeah, its damn annoying. My TV reception is good with at least 80% signal strength using rabbit-ears antenna. I usually have to change the channel back/forth to refresh the screen. Hopefully one day we will see "realtime caption generators". :)

Rolls Royce, Ha! In your dreams.

Realtime caption generators, hmm? If that happens in your life, would you use them?

I don't know what type of HA you have (assuming you wear HA), but I saw the audiologist last week, and she said my 3yr old HA are outdated, and you can get HA that can automatically adjust to the environment. But, they cost $9k, which I think is insane considering how fast technology changes.

I think it there is a possibility that it will happen sooner than we think. But, whether I'd use it would depend on how reliability. I am not fussed about accurate spelling/grammar as long as it I can follow the plot that I am watching.

No, I don't wear HA's anymore. I gave it up, about 8 years ago. I am not wearing anything. I am completely deaf and comfortable on what I am, communicates in AUSLAN and definitely can talk like a normal person ;)

$9,000? Holy Smokes!

No wonder why insurance companies give the deaf people such a hard time.

Ah, I see..:) Is AUSLAN hard to learn?

Yeah, it is a lot of money, especially if you don't have insurance. Thats why I told my audiologist that I am contemplating buying HA via Ebay and tuning them myself. She was not happy... Oh well...

No wonder insurance hates these HAs
