Trouble with mail in credit cards

I was at dinner with my Mom at Apple Bees. My Mom over heard a group of people at table across from us talking.

Apparently, the Mom lived in Illinois with her daughter. The daughter took a offer of mail in credit card, and then forged Mom's name. The daughter got credit card and then fled to Florida. The daughter spent a lot of money and credit went up to $25K. They came after Mom. Mom didn't know anything about it. It was not me, you know!! Mom was surprised!!

I don't know if she spent $25K. I'm guessing she spent maybe 18 or 19K and then interest added up.

Then they went after the daughter in Florida. The daughter is in jail now.

I wonder how credit card company will get their money back. Go after the daughter when she gets out of jail?

I think it is very stupid to do mail in credit offer. Just be careful, very careful!!
 
any credit card is stupid. I only have one and use for extreme emergency only.
 
The daughter is a thief....and sad she would do this to her Mother....If the girl did indeed "forge" her mothers signature on the card, then I don't foresee the mother being responsible...wondering how old the daughter was?....And it does seem the daughter is headed for a life of crime....if she spent 25K....on a forged signature...does seem she will spend some time in jail and will be held responsible for the money she forged....Feel sure the Mother will have to hire a Lawyer.

I would guess the daughter to be about 30 or so. I would think Mom won't have to hire a lawyer since it has been proved that the daughter did forgery on credit card signature.

Mom lives in Illinois. Daughter had billing address sent to Florida. There it is!!

I disagree. I have one that gives me 5% cash back on alot of my purchases, so I use it and then get a check in the mail once in a while. Pay off the entire balance every month, so there's no interest, and this card doesn't have any other fees, so it's a good deal. I don't think they offer it these days, but sometimes you find good situations out there.

There you go...the daughter is 30 or so...then she will be held 100% fully responsible for this debt.....If the daughter was under 18...then I would see a problem somewhat....

I have one that I just pay off, and I get rewards like gift cards, or whatever I choose.

It's like free money, and it saves money from writing no checks also.

You do sound level-headed...unfortunately, not all people are....No matter their ages...A friend of mine is a good example, she's in her 50's....and several credit card creditors are after her...big time!

well - it's a tough choice but the only way to get out of $25k debt is to report it as fraud to police and yea that would means her daughter will have to go to jail.

a criminal record or $25,000 debt... which? tough choice.

same. I have amazon credit card and I probably have collected at least $300 free money from it.

Not in all situations they are stupid, it is just the persons who abuse it... Rob peter to pay paul.

it's because I order a lot from amazon.com and I use this card for everything so I rack in tons of points.

I have four, but I watch my accounts carefully online and don't make purchases unless I have money in hand to pay for them. The only exception was the Widex...which I just paid off in full only a week ago...I think the highest credit rating is 850, my score is 799...for good reason. Credit cards aren't money, just IOUs....

I don't believe in credit cards, so I don't have any. Besides, I don't want to end up being in serious debt from using them, especially since I am on a very limited income.

Unfortunately, many vendors online won't accept cash, check or a money order so you'll be limited on what you buy. Unless of course you're asking someone else to order it for you and paying them. Also, if you get a medical bill, it's unlikely you'll have that amount on hand in cash to cut a check. Sometimes it's good to have one for those expenses, especially if your car ever broke down and they needed payment right away.

how much interest do you pay? :hmm:

never quite understood how people swear their credit cards are giving them benefits when interest is being charged that day one uses it...

this is perfect model of a person knowing the limit. Wish many of us had this mindset
